Just wondering if anyone 'upsells' when selling a domain? Once the sale has been completed, it seems the perfect opportunity if you have web design, SEO or logo design skills to have a conversation about them using your services.

Alternatively, with their permission, passing their details on to a trusted someone to do one of these services and getting a referral fee.

From experience, I've never managed to cross-sell design or web services. I personally feel it's a completely different conversation.

Interesting thought. Although I would have thought most of the people you're selling to already have that in place so tough sell. How would you approach it ? Here...buy this fab domain that will help your business and get you traffic....by the way the site is crap , content rubbish and I can help with that:)

I've cross-sold a holding page and some graphics work, but totally different things.

No, I was talking about after the sale has taken place. To talk about other things would just confuse the whole issue.

It was just a thought that crossed my mind as a sale I had last week asked for a recommendation for someone to put a site on the domain.

I have occasionally managed to upsell another domain name. Usually, unless it's singular/plural or something similarly close, I don't muddy the discussion with end users with other domains we own that might be relevant to them.

But once the deal is done, they have the domain, and they (hopefully) have a good impression of a quick, smooth sale, it seems like a great opportunity to mention related domains.

Doesn't lead to a LOT of extra sales, but it's worked often enough that I plan to keep doing it.

We used to do it quite a lot. Pitch with the domain name and price and also offering mini sites. I would say we had around a 20 percent take up. Mind you we only charged 200 for the minisites.

Not something id do with every sale, if its a niche I think I can capture a good contact with and/or if think i can slip it into the conversation casually. I tend to only do it if they are leading the conversation and seem interested/interesting. It's worked a couple of times, one particular sale of a service with a .com sale, ended up being a much more valuable contract than the domain sold for and 4 years later they are still one of my most valuable clients.

Never had the same kind of responses from UK buyers , much more of a hurried transaction with no care for small talk.

Might do better to build the mini-site before selling the domain? Selling a website which they can see (and see how you could customise) would probably get past a lot of hurdles - even if it's only thrown together, or incomplete.

Depending on how your marketing it, and to whom.

If you have you a reseller account, and its under a different brand, you could include a years hosting and free transfer if they create an account in hosting brand X.

I've got a couple of long term clients in Australia that way, not only did they pay $500 plus for the domain, but they renewed their hosting accounts and domains back with me as well.
