I caught a name last week (via caught) and have since sent out 10-20 emails to endusers offering it for sale.

There is no trademark for the word(s) in the domain.

I have just had a reply to one of the emails saying:
I own ________________.co.uk you cannot sell it

Kind regards

_____________
How would you reply to this?

Are they saying that they own the name you're trying to sell, or are they saying that they own a similar name?

They are saying they own the domain, i assume they are the previous owners.

Sorry, you do not own ________________.co.uk I can sell it

Kind regards

_____________

Tricky one - perhaps don't reply and leave them to make their own enquiries with their ISP or whatever.

just got the same situation with nominet copied in for good measure :)

Just thinking about this further, why not just send them the link to the WHOIS?

I have emailed back with a link to the whois and asking if they are interested in buying it. Will let you know how i get on.

"I'm afraid your information is incorrect. I am the legal owner of _____.co.uk"

Why not just explain to them the real situation in as much detail as possible, so that they understand, i.e. the fact that they have let it drop, you have legally re-registered it when it was available to the public, if it wasn't you, someone else would have etc etc.

Keep it polite and business like, because they could be your best buyer.

Rgds

I think I copied this from the jelly bean topic on that other forum where the previous owner was moaning about it, it's the timeline for domains dropping, send this to them so they get a better understanding:

Timeline for situations such as these which seems to be the cause for unrest:

1 - Domain name is running fine.

2 - ISP renewal notice comes through and is ignored.

3 - Nominet email renewal notice comes through and is ignored.

4 - Nominet PAPER renewal notice comes through the post and is ignored.

5 - Domain name is suspended and does not work for email or website for THREE months, and no action is taken.

6 - Nominet delete the domain after 6 months of attempted contact and three months of suspension.

7 - Someone else registers it in reasonable assumption that the previous owner didnt care that much about it.

How much time do people think should be used to tell people that a name is due for renewal, and how long should Nominet wait *after* that point before re-releasing the domain?

IMHO if a domain name ceases to function for three months and I do not notice (and a total of 6 months of renewals), I would hardly call the name vital

Whoever wrote that list is a genius ;)

It does need updating somewhat as it was based on paper based renewal methods

Tricky one - perhaps don't reply and leave them to make their own enquiries with their ISP or whatever.

Good advice. Bensd only sent out 10-20 feelers, and one of them turns out to be the previous owner. Couldn't he already point out the 'confusingly similar' arguement?

I got a fishy one today, but then most inquiries are fishy :)

Comments: Dear Sir,
I have a website www.dri----supervisor.co.uk which i need removing from the web. I thought it was through webhost but they say its through you. I stopped paying for the site years ago thinking that it would be removed automatically but I was shocked to find it is still there.

Dear Sir,
Why are you keeping it live. I do not wish to keep it so what is the use of keeping it live. I wish to delete it from the internet. I am frightened that the information could be used for other purposes. Please delete
