The awaited successor to the iPad is expected to launch later tonight at an event in London. Some rumours suggest a white version, 2 cameras, usb support, thinner, better sound quality... Guess we will soon find out what all the fuss has been about. UK pre orders in the coming couple of weeks I assume. Only going off press reports obviously but I have been waiting for this day, hoping to push these out to some of my clients. Ill have a white one please.

I'd been saving up Amazon vouchers for an iPad, but that's before I knew the iPad 2 was coming along. I wonder how long it'll be it sees the light of day and how much???

That's true of most tech though. When you buy something, there will soon be something newer and shinier just around the corner ... and it's getting worse!

I suspect most people will be underwhelmed by the iPad 2, will probably have front and rear cameras plus slimmer, lighter & faster.

Keynote is in San Francisco not London though.

I sold mine off (version 1) at a good price in anticipation of the iPad 2. Now having seen the specs, I'm underwhelmed. No RAM increase and no better screen resolution. Looking to get an iPad 1 from eBay for about £250 or less soon. 16GB WiFi version. Will then wait for the 3rd version

Can you save files from emails on the iPad and store files to email etc?

Yea no doubt that will be the one with the biggest changes or at least that's how it usually is with apple.

The mrs has an ipad and i have to say it is a great piece of kit.

but for me, there are a couple of real clangers ....

No flash. Why is this?
I have a 12yr old and a 3yr old. They love to play games. The ipad is redundant for them as most games are in flash.

You can't pop in a usb stick to view, change or indeed save documents.
You have to buy an app to make it compatible with open office. When you finish writing a doc, you cannot save to stick?

The only way to get it to a printer in my house is to send it via email to my desktop pc? what a waste of time.

Surely there are more Windows pc owners of the Ipad than there are MAC owners? I think they have to address this as i can see them losing their market share (just like their phone) as android tablets come to market.

I've had an HTC Desire HD* for about a week now and I'm most impressed with it. It does make me wonder if I should use my Amazon vouchers for an iPad or whether to have a serious look at the Android tablets.

I would think about 99.9% of the population are not storing in a cloud (including me. Are you?). I would think the majority of internet users never will. They use their pc for:

surfing
shopping
email
photos
letter writing
banking
gaming

No cloud required.


Maybe cloud will take off in years to come. Maybe when we get full UK wireless coverage

3G is piss. It's like the old 56K dial up.

How many people in the UK are using some form of web-based mail service to send, receive and store emails? GMail, Hotmail, Y!Mail. How many of those emails ever hit a user's hard-drive?

So the concept of the cloud is already well used for years, without being termed cloud computing.

How many people post their pictures straight to Facebook from their smartphones? They are storing and sharing their pictures in the cloud.

To answer your question about me -

I use my Yahoo mail for all my personal stuff, so that I can access the emails from anywhere and when my laptop crashes and burns, I've lost nowt. I just need to get my finger out and find somewhere to do the same with my pictures.

In my job, I'm in the process of migrating large amounts of data to SalesForce, I use Google Docs to share information and my work email is up on Rackspace.

I totally agree. It is made up but i'm sure i will not be far off the mark.
Let me rephrase my answer. 99.9% of personal users.

I'm not talking about business. Do you store your personal documents and personal photos on cloud?

Only people who wish to use a social network, which is by far, the huge minority. How many people take photos to store for their own personal viewing? (I bet you do and you use facebook) A lot more. Why would they need cloud? You can already buy 256gb usb sticks. (granted, for a lot of money but give it 2yrs and you will get them for £30) That's probably 200GB more than they will ever use when it somes down to what is not trash on your pc.

How many photos or documents would 50gb hold? I would think more than a lifetimes worth. You put that little lot on a stick and pop into another pc anywhere you want.

I know what you are saying and cloud is a great idea, but as I stated, it all comes back to one fundamental thing. Connection. So i think cloud for the personal pc user is a long time off. It is an extra step the personal pc user will not be bothered with. Everytime you save a photo to your pc, you then have to connect to upload to the cloud? when all you have to do is pop in a stick and its done in a tenth of the time.

Would you be doing that if you had a piss poor connection or unreliable connection? Would you be doing it if some of the staff only had 3G? Unless you stay in a city, that's still the reality of internet connection.

What would you do if all your documents are clouded and you're off to see a client and
1. He doesn't have wireless (do you ask if you can borrow his pc?)
2. His connection is down?


Cloud is a great idea, but it in my view it will be a good few years before the majority of the population of personal pc users are using it the way the cloud hosters want them to use it. Remember, cloud hosters are only doing what other ISP's are doing. They are trying to sell you space and most personal pc users I would think are not yet interested in parting with their cash for that space as they don't need it.

Here is another thing I think is flawed with the iPad.

In order for me to get my photos off my micro sd card from my phone on to the iPad, they want me to purchase a USB card adaptor at the ridiculous price of £25. So no photos reside on the mrs iPad. What a waste.

I presume they can charge this as (with their phone originally) they do not have any competition but this will change in the very near future.

I think they are a victim of their own success. They have brought 2 great gadgets to market and now the masses are purchasing. The masses being non MAC users. Maybe they do it in the hope that people will abandon their Windows pc's and go all "apple". This will never happen and they must know this by now. They have lost a huge chunk of the phone market as android does all that iPhone does and soon a lot more as it is an open source platform. The only way to get open source apps for the iPhone is to jail brake it. What a shame. I also think the price of the iPhone now restricts it and the same will go for the iPad shortly as it will soon be beaten on both price and cross platform compatibility.

Kind of ironic as I sit here and type this on the mrs iPad.
