I am looking at getting a Nominet TAG, and was wondering if it's really worth it?

I worked out that with my personal limit of no more than 10 domains per month, it would cost around £10 per domain for the first year, and there's no guarantee that I will be able to write the software to catch.

Then you have the fact that my intention would be to sell the domains on DomainLore, meaning there is a charge of £5 if the domain doesn't flip.

Probably best waiting to see how direct.uk turns out.

Why not try your hand for a month or so using a regular third-party registrar, then invest your profits (assuming you have any) in getting your own Nominet tag? That way you're not out of pocket any more than you absolutely have to be.

Would having a TAG not entitle you to become a registrar of .uk domains, If they go ahead with the proposal?

That's not a bad idea, I did see a post where someone was selling some catching spots for £200, I'll give it a go with those first I think.

Thing is, just because you are a tag holder it doesn't mean you will be able to sell .uk or manage them for yourself.

So you maybe spending £600 becoming a tag holder which will only allow you to register .co.uk and .org.uk's etc whilst you have to host your .uk's at one of the big boys at £15 a year. This is due to the fact you might have to become a accredited registrar to sell .uk, that may cost £5k or leaving a bond, nobody knows.

I'd hold off to be honest.

I wouldn't be selling to people directly, just third party resell's like most of the people on this forum, I think the word I should have used was 'Nominet Member'

I think I will leave it about 6-9 months and then think about it again.

You've probably missed the boat on this if your just interested in the membership for drop catching.
V2 of the direct.uk proposal has all but paralysed the reseller market.
Nominet are also proposing changes to the registrar agreement which will completely reshape the practice of drop catching should it go ahead.
I got a tag less than 6 months ago more than recouped the costs within the first 2 months it all comes down to luck really.
With the slow market its a lot more of a gamble now although you could probably still make the money back before any changes are introduced.
