Am going to change my default browser start page to bing, it'll take some getting used to but also will encourage me to focus on getting my sites ranked for bang'&yohoo!

As a little bit of personal salvation i never have used chrome ...

I'm just waiting for the day this becomes very 'public'

If people actually realised what G were doing, and manipulating results in such a way as not to drive 'quality content' as Cutts keeps rambling again and again and again blah blah blah - but to force them to click on companies that are paying Google the most money for them.....people would shift in droves

Can't believe Bing-a-ling and Yahooooooo-ooo haven't cottoned on to this yet and either making it a bit known (subtly) or actually create a SE that people want to use

They have both for years plugged their model, and year after year are not filling the divide. Bing, I thought, a couple of years ago would finally do it - but the 'poorer' results for search terms meant it wasn't sticky enough

Surely someone wants to layeth down thy mighty gauntlet and take up this challenge!!??

I think we as web masters are as much to blame over the SE popularity, I never even checked my results other than on Google before today. I just changed my default SE to Bing. Never used it once before.

I must say their top ads now blend so much, on one laptop I use they are virtually indistinguishable from the natural listings!

On my laptop I can only see 1 search result without scrolling

Why bing.co.uk doesn't default to .uk searches is beyond me. For those that just expect it to be UK searches they could find the results disappointing until they switch it over.

To achieve what?

Reliance on a single service provider is still a reliance whether it is Google/Bing/Yahoo/Facebook/Twitter etc.

To achieve actually finding what you're searching for in the first few positions. That's what this thread is about. A search engine that no longer provides accurate search results in favour of pushing paid ads at you is not useful.

Go to settings and add your location:

Location
Identify your location with city and state or postal code to get search results that might be relevant to your area.

I only see UK results when I search without selecting the .UK option on the homepage.

But paid ads, by their very nature, provide what people (searchers) are looking for.

If they didn't then the company wouldn't make any money from the traffic and couldn't afford to run the ads.

Do you think if everyone moved to Bing they wouldn't trying and capitalise on the situation by trying to increase ad revenue?

Bing is as bad for adverts.

I'm annoyed with this new change. Used to use the options on the left to find news, video etc - can't find that now. If it ain't broke...

This is an interesting read and mentions googles dip in the search market.

The Guardian

Im going to switch to bing for a while as I miss the old uk search option on google.

And they're also kept in check by Google's quality scores.

Google is best for technical searches still but if you want to buy anything, Bing now seems like the place to do it.

So I can only assume that Google can't fight the spam. The payday loan example being a key indicator in that.

Agreed, I think the very-hard-to-see box behind the top three ads should be a bit more prominent.

The thing is that a lot of the time the 'ads' and results are pretty much relevant to the search. With 90% market share they have the room to experiment.

No they don't! If I search for a product or service I don't think a paid ad that offers different stuff is what I'm looking for.
If you search 'Ugg Boots' one of the paid ads at the top is from Ugg-Fashion-Australia who sell very similar boots to what you are looking for but have this disclaimer 'Please Note: We are not in any way affiliated with the American Company Deckers Outdoor Corporation whose products are made in China and we don't sell Decker's UGG Australia brand. The terms "ugg", "ugg boots" or "uggs" are generic terms in Australia that describe sheepskin boots.

Its a bit like calling your website hoover-vacuum-cleaners.com then saying hoovers is a generic term

But the point of a search engine is to provide the best and most relevant search results for what you've keyed in

By 'best' I'm referring for Cutt's continuous references to quality by content and favourable social factors and authoritive referrals

What I'm not looking for is a yellow pages of the Internet world. Could go on to any crappy directory for that.

What G are doing is wrong. I'd even go as far as to say morally wrong.

When people are being what I would term as 'tricked' in to clicking adverts to go buy something from someone - just because they've paid the most money - is no longer a 'search engine', but an advert engine!

It just reminds me of salesman pushing other peoples products not because they are the best or cheapest, but because they're going to make the most commission.....

.....doesn't sound very fair, particuarly from a company who the average Joe on the street would be gobsmacked to hear about
