are a bunch of tightwads

we were in admin (http://www.businessesforsale.com/ft/a511362.aspx)

but were bought out by staplesdisposables.com

we had a power cut at heywood 4:00 ish, no lights computers and would they let us go home ..no, you could'nt see or read anything and they would'nt let us leave until 5.00.

How petty is that?

don't think I'll get one, the *%££%$& cheapskates.

word out on the streets (production shop floor) is that they'll be replacing everyone with underpaid polish workers (similar to their setup in staplesdisposables), people arn't happy here.

Thought all domain dabblers on here were coined up!! (apart from me who hasn't sold a domain in his life but would love to)

Or is that just all a myth. ;)

what do you expect when a bunch of ***ing accountants try and run a company!

staff morale - ******* that - its all bottom line. But hey, they *will* lose out in the end. No matter who it is, if you treat your staff like shite, they will pay the price.

walk out the door and take everything with you.

Eeek... I'm an accountant and work for that company. Better go into hiding.

I work for a ftse 100 company and it's no different. Management couldn't organise a proverbial Piss up in a brewery.

JRC,

you work for staples?

you ...poor .. man

is it true you guys only get an extra day for 20yrs of service?

It's getting worse here

they've stopped coffee and milk and are going to get a vending machine so we all (20 staff) pay 0.30p a cup (does'nt help when our overpayed brownnosed wa*&%$er of an accountant is dobbing everyone to ensure his future stay at the company).

need to pick up my game plan and get out or hang on and wait for Mrs.Millionaire to sweep me off my feet.

It's understandable that they'd need to cut costs throughout the business so as to try and help prevent it going down the tubes again...

... but things like stopping the coffee and bringing in a vending machine is just plain stupid as they'll lose more money with the inefficiency/beef caused by putting everyone's back up about it.

It's a very short term cost saving, do you know what the new owner's plans are? Are they in it for the long term or are they planning to resell once they've (apparently) "sorted" the business out?

Isnt it better to expect staff to cough up for a cuppa or bring their own in a thermos rather than see the company go down the pan?

What would piss you off more, having no free tea or having no job ?

This is where the English workforce disappoint. I would be willing to come in for an hour or two unpaid to help the company I worked for if it meant I was helping to safe guard my job.

I can see your point - you're a hard man :)

But realistically how much is providing the tea and coffee costing them? Can't be that much.

Sometimes you need your workforce to go the extra mile, it's about give and take. If all you do is take, you can't expect them to go the extra mile.

If it was something "big" then fair enough... but the tea and coffee? It's such a small thing, but it causes so much upset in workplaces when you start meddling with it.

In general though I do agree with you about the English workforce - it's not at all like it used to be. I think part of it is the demise of the "job for life" (.co.uk - nice :) ). There's no long term loyalty anymore because it's more normal for people to move job more often. Couple that with the demise of moral values and society in general, and here we are in modern Britain. It's shite .

the new owner plans to run the buisness and produce printed tissue for the uk market (that Goulds has an 80% share of) our biggest customer M&S WANTS the company to continue to supply them (everything you see in their shop tissue wise is us).

about the english workforce and going the extra mile

I do all the IT for this company and have worked for it for 12 years, recently I came up with a proposal to save the company £25,400 every year in electricity. I've given this to the new owners, have they taken this up, no, they're more concerned with vending machines and putting the cimper on their staff. (see my sig for details on this saving if interested)

Two weeks ago I was at home working til 12:30 to get an IPSEC tunnel working between goulds-staples, did'nt get overtime or thanks from the new owners instead got told off for leaving at 4:57 , and that we must have 'office 'respect'.

so at the moment I don't feel like going the 'extra mile' or doing any unpaid work from home.

Coffee,tea,sugar,milk is costing £350 p.a.

JRC,

Do you know Ben Wildsmith at EY?

All the women here fancy him like mad even Colin the Cleaner.

He is in manchester office in corporate recovery I think. Iv never met him and doesnt appear to be on the ey facebook network so cant comment.

Sounds to me like these new bosses of yours don't have the foggiest idea about running a company. Sadly, i've seen exactly this scenario myself before. I took over the running of a UK comms manufacturing company which had lost £1m in turnover (down to just £1.6M), and within 2 years i had it up to £6.8M by focussing on agressive sales targetting, efficient manufacturing and profit jobs only (no loss leaders under any circumstances).
The new yankee owners then wanted to get involved more, so they started on the corporate image crap, installing vending machines for food & drink (couldn't bring in your own), cutting (and cancelling) everyone's bonus, no private phone calls, monitoring the internet access, installing a recorded telephone system, appointing specific parking bays to select individuals, forcing unrealistic development schedules to projects (therefore rubbing the customers backs up with inevitable late completions), and recruiting 'gift of the gab' losers for critical positions in the company, plus much more besides.

Within 1 year, i'd resigned because i was first to see what would happen (set up my own company and never looked back), and the whole operation was shut down within 9 months of leaving. They became a laughing stock, and everyone of my original team stayed within the industry, and thankfully have promising & secure jobs.

If they're worrying about the tea & coffee, it's time to look for a new job!

I agree, I know it will be a hard decision to make since you have been there for so long, but it is time to bail out and look for new pastures.

I used to work for a large UK electricity generating company........ Been there 14 years on the retail side and doing very well.

Then came the takeover. Within 3 months they had brought (what they regarded) key figures in from within the industry but from our competitors. (Dixons, Comet)

What did the new boses do? First off they disbanded the canteen and brought in vending machines (so the "company" now profited from its own employees)

Secondly, they installed a climate of fear. Everyone was looking over their shoulders to see what their work colleagues were doing or saying. "lunch was for whimps and tea breaks were for nancy boys" was the general feeling in the (I was going to put office) but it was in the whole building.

"What are you doing for the company" was the saying we heard, all day every day.

At this stage I bailed out.

It's a real shame as they completely loose focus on their most important asset....... their employees. They think by instilling an atmosphere of fear they get the best out of their workforce.

All the good people left and were replaced by a plethora of pimple faced 17yr olds that pounced on you as soon as you entered a store as they were on shit wages and just as shit bonuses and they needed your sale.

2 years later came the bombshell..... the corporate big wigs at HQ decided that their core focus was generating electricity and they were not interested in retail sell-ons. So at the stroke of an accountants pen, they shut the whole operation down and 2000 people lost their jobs. (including the arseholes they brought in)

........................

The moral of the story is leave now and don't become a statistic.
