We've joined Nominet and applied for our tag. We won't be handling any 3rd party registrations.

Wondering if anyone has any tips on being a tag holder - any common issues, best way to organise renewals, use of software etc

One tip, if you need to carry out a transfer, do it for free using the available tools. You can change not just the tag, but also the registrant details too, though you may need to add their name into the associated third party section whilst you do it then remove.

Something like WHMCS is a nice tool for handling domain renewals and pushing changes to Nominet if you don't want to use their web domain manager, plus it has the bonus that if you did want to manage 3rd party names it will do all the renewal etc for you, however, the web based Nominet interface is not that bad for making limited changes. An EPP client is not that difficult to write if you wanted something bespoke. I guess it depends on how many names you will manage and how frequently you will be making changes.
