Hi all,
I am the Editor of Domain Focus Magazine and I need your help.
What are your views on Nominet? Good ones please - and if you have other views those too?
We are featuring a live debate at the Domain Focus London Show on 6th and 7th September at the Savoy Hotel. We want to ensure a fair and balanced debate.
Best wishes
James Taylor

Hi James

Can you tell me if your a tag member of nominet and do you have any idea what domain names are.
Looking at your first post a journalist or editor should always have a balanced view of the subject matter.
And by the tone of your post your clearly not showing a balanced view.
so dont expect to get others to ruffle there feathers.
and ask for peoples views when no one know who you are.

Ps thought steve russell was doing the domain magazine for the UK or is this just another mikey mouse subject

Fair and Balanced? Who am I?

DomainKing,
Sometimes to achieve a "balanced view" you have to stir things up a bit and ask awkward questions. You will see that I do respond to people's views and have altered my posting to emphasis that we want a "fair and balanced debate".

As for me I own a small porfolio of domain names mostly .coms
I am a maritime historian by training and former Curator of Paintings, Drawings and Prints at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich - the worlds largest maritime museum. Also an award winning writer and lecturer on subjects such as Captain James Cook, Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

So yes, to a greater extent I am somewhat of an outsider to the domain industry. As the editor of a new domain magazine I see that as a strength - a new vision and appoach and insight into the domain world.

I have not got a clue what goes on under the bonnet of my car but it does not stop me driving it around effectively. So I hope to steer the Domain Focus Magazine in a new direction. If you don't like my writing style or tone so be it. I cannot please everyone. But I hope that domainers will have an open mind and help to make the magazine a success.

If you think my writing style is provocative what of your Ps concerning the domain magazine "is this just another mikey mouse subject" Fair dos.

well with an open mind perhaps you should speak to nominet first and maybe ask nominet for you to view how there business model works and functions.
Then come back and if you have issues then post.

and ask peoples views to me from your first post just looks like
another stab at nominet from someone who does not have a clue as to what goes on.
Looks like your trying to get other domainers to fight your battle
i suggest before you print anything about nominet spend some money on being a tag member and check out the system.
and speak to the people inside nominet who do a good job
instead of a stupid cruseade trying to rill up domainers.

and just like cook he studied maps to see how the terain was i suggest you do the same thing

Voyage of Discovery

Many thanks for your reply and suggestions about how I should undertake my research work.

Your comments on Captain James Cook are interesting. Cook didn't have the charts or maps to study because they did not exist. He created them by voyaging to places where no (or very few) Europeans had been before. Cook's three voyages of discovery literally changed the face of the world.

I am beginning to see my quest to discover more information about Nominet as a pioneering journey.

Might I know your name? You know mine.

Ouch domainking, you walked into that one! :)

Did you write that piece "London Calling..." on london.co.uk and the other domains in that portfolio?

James

I did mention this in your other thread. Why not provide contact details such as email address for validating your identity or users sending comments.

As domainking mentioned I'm surprised as editor you don't appear to have contacted Nominet. As I understand it Nominet are not going to the London show. There is a blackhole in the arguement of a balanced debate, if anything it gives me the impression of a magazine that has comparisions with "The Sun". LC or ET on Page three guys?

How are you going to get validity to the debate?

What external research have you conducted into Nominet and the relationship with ICANN, the US and UK governments, IP lawyers and other
"prioritised interests"?

Do not get me wrong, a magazine with an anarcho-capitialism ideology has a place in the industry!

James you are welcome to email me!

London Calling...

Argonaut, yes I wrote the London Calling... piece. My understanding is that the portfolio is now being developed.
Thanks for the contact
James

Olebean thanks for your input

Olebean,
Thanks for your input and I will email you soon.
I have some way to go before the article is ready for publication and as you can imagine it has to pass muster, or the legal eagles will descend. So facts have to be straight and content balanced.
We have had an initial response from Lesley Cowley which has been posted on the Domain Focus homepage and I will be requesting an interview with her shortly. What would you wager on that response?
I think when my mother looked at her 10lb baby boy back in the early 1960s she thought this one is going to be a handful! :p
I want a magazine that is fun (perhaps a bit of light-hearted anarchy) that is also full of engaging facts and a pleasure to read.
Maybe my approach is more tabloid than Telegraph but those tabloids have the biggest readership and break new stories and get people talking.
I know the venture will not please everyone out there -but what the heck!
I would welcome your help.
Best wishes
James

It will be interesting to see if the domain name industry can support a 3rd print magazine, beyond "Domainer's Magazine" and "Modern Domainer" which are already out there and increasing their profile in the industry...

A Print Magazine.. ?

Edwin,
Thanks for yours.
Actually it will not be in print form, rather a small lively on-line must-read monthly magazine. Size is not important (...?) it is the content that counts.
James
PS Was that too tabloid?

Hi James

Yes your right cook did not have maps for the later stages of his journey
but just like you at the begining he knew how to get to france spain and a few other places. and yes he did his homework first and then set out on a adventure. so your first port of call should be nominet then icann and everywhere else that relates to domains.

Right Course of Action

DomainKing,
Thanks for yours.
Those are the vital ports of call on my journey.
Welcome any assistance.
James

DomainKing,
I have not got a clue what goes on under the bonnet of my car but it does not stop me driving it around effectively.
James

It probably does rule you out as editor of a car magazine however ;)

Car Magazine

To be known as the Jeremy Clarkson of the domain world would be something I guess?
Your name Diablo means the devil or satan. You don't sound too devilish to me!:twisted::twisted:

:) It's my online gaming name and works well because I play with both English and Spanish speakers.

Good luck with the online mag anyway. I'll be a reader.

Hey, King, who you calling Mickey Mouse??? Is that you Tommy, you scaliwag? You must know me, cuz I do wear a Mickey Mouse watch. I wear it to remind myself that no matter how successful I might be, I should never take myself, or life, too seriously.

I am curious, how does one become King? I've only managed to build a portfolio of 7,000 names in the past 10 months. So, what does that make me? Marquis?

I did pass the torch to James as Editor of DFMagazine. I was getting too busy with my other pursuits to be able to do a proper job of it. So, give him a break, he is eminently qualified for the post. And he has an unbiased and virginal view of our industry. Let's give him a "first night" experience he'll remember with a smile... although I did warn him that ours is a tough room to play, and very few give quarter. Arrrrrrr, matey!

Good Luck, James, and keep a jar of Vasoline handy.

Tommy, if this is you, SKYPE me one of these days.

Steve Russell
