DigiBus is a project run by Cheltenham-based charity, ITSA Digital Trust, which brings digital education and support to the local community within Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

Michael Findlay, IT Director at Hooble nominated DigiBus for funding through the Nominet Members’ GiveHub in July 2023. The Members’ GiveHub allows Nominet members to give back to their local community and make a genuine difference to people’s lives. We awarded £10,000 in funding to help DigiBus continue its vital work, educating the community about how to make the most of life online.

The DigiBus project helps to ensure people of all ages feel empowered by technology, rather than intimidated by it. From online banking to digital health services, social media and everything in between – the digital world dominates in today’s society. Knowing how to navigate life online is crucial both practically and to ensure a sense of connection and belonging.

“We were delighted to be nominated by Michael Findlay, IT Director at Hooble and to hear that we had received a grant from the Nominet Members’ Givehub for our digital inclusion project, the DigiBus. This will enable us to continue providing much needed one-to-one digital support for people of all ages in Gloucestershire. As a charity we rely on donations to continue our important work; helping to connect and improve life opportunities in the UK.”

Geoffrey Newsome – Chief Executive Officer

About the DigiBus project: Teaching digital skills safely

Since launching in October 2021, the DigiBus project team has been travelling around the county, making stops at a variety of community venues and schools offering free to use services.

DigiBus offers a wide range of services to help people feel confident online, from help searching and browsing the web safely, to using apps and social media and device troubleshooting. Online safety is a key focus at DigiBus, which also includes scam support.

In addition, the charity teaches individuals how to carry out everyday tasks efficiently online. This includes accessing digital health services (like booking a GP appointment or ordering prescriptions), online banking and how to shop online safely.

Finally, the DigiBus project aims to boost employability and teaches users how to search and apply for jobs online – from CV and cover letter creation through to submitting a completed application.

Helping the wider community embrace the digital world

The funding will go towards bus running costs, enabling people within the community to learn vital tools, knowledge and skills that they can use to manage their lives more efficiently and effectively.

The social and societal impact of the charity’s free support services can’t be overstated – helping to reduce isolation, increase IT literacy and employability, and improve online security. The DigiBus project may also open up new opportunities for those who take advantage of its services, from sports and hobby clubs through to volunteer initiatives.

“This exceptionally generous and kind grant will enable us (the DigiBus Team) to continue our mission of helping to alleviate ‘Digital Deprivation’ in communities within Gloucestershire, along with helping those most in need to feel confident, secure, and to thrive within the ‘Digital World’ which we are now all part of.”
