Interesting article on the bottom of the www.domainfocus.co.uk homepage:

IT’S A NO SHOW !
for Nominet UK

Nominet UK will not be attending the premiere conference show of Domain Focus in September this year. Apparently they are too preoccupied. Although a significant number of their clients will be attending the London based event at The Savoy hotel.

At Domain Focus we think they may be too preoccupied making money, rather than representing the issues confronting the contemporary domainer.

Our headline article in the first issue of Domain Focus Magazine, out in September, will feature a detailed examination of Nominet UK.

These are some of the questions we want addressed and we want to know your views of Nominet UK. Do you think that Nominet UK is more of a hindrance than a helper to the domain community? Do you even know what they actually do?

Nominet UK is the Internet registry for all .uk domain names and they manage over six million of them. According to the home page “With 3,000 members, 115 staff and a turnover of £14m, we play a key role at the heart of the UK e-commerce.”

We are convening a discussion panel at Domain Focus London with Alan Barnet of 20:20 Media , among others, to air and encourage debate of the prime issues. We openly invite a senior player of Nominet UK to participate.

Who set up Nominet UK and gave it exclusive powers and rights to register .uk names?

Who really makes the policy decisions?

When Nominet UK was originally established there was talk of the company being “Not for Profit”. Where does your money actually go?

Nominet UK offers additional services such as assistance with disputes. Is there are conflict of interest here?

Do they operate as poacher and gamekeeper?

Even though they do have a Registrar Information Day on the 6th September (where Jay Daley etc will be): http://www.nominet.org.uk/news/latest/?contentId=3493

And the PAB papers on "waiting lists" and domaining "menu of policy options" are due to be published the same week.....

Surely someone like Stuart Dennis should be allowed to attend?

Well they wouldn't want to be seen endorsing the "after sales market"

nice post.... they will not show, even though they state that "a number of their clients will be attending!" which is pretty bloody obvious as its a uk focus on uk DN's.....

they will not take a simple back seat and listen to what is needed and what is required to progress DNing in the UK, that is why all questions ever asked of the that nature are "shelved" or answered by poxy bots and Q&A scripts....

be nice if the UK Domain governing body actually turned up at UK Domain show... sort of makes plain sense or are we missing something....

they use to

they use to post on here but now they don't...read between the lines...

The PAB have less observing bodies, don't they?

End of the day, I have one simple observation....no company has ever got away with selling something dodgy...goes against all morals
