I know this has probably been bought up frequent times before, but can any one direct me to a statement from Nominet on why we're still paying £10+VAT for the transfer of a domain name?

I completely understood their pricing when it was a manual paper driven exercise, but now it is all automated and working seamless almost every time, why are we still filling the already pretty full coffers?

Surely it is time to review charges or am i missing something?

I have had two or three sales recent overseas - all of which I have had to explain over and over that there is a fee and it is not a "free push". They all think it's nuts and it is probably not helping smaller transactions for buyers either.

Why not just pay it and then it's "transparent" to the buyers? If necessary, adjust your initial asking price upwards to "hide" the fee...

I do - that's not really my point.

I just think it's time to question why the same fee is in place even though the process has changed?

It's not a cost that seems to be justified.

I would prefer a decrease but not for free. The fact that Nominet records the financial transaction e.g. credit card details, adds a layer of protection.

They would probably argue that the system was expensive to put in place. When any new payment is brought in by any company (or the government), there will likely to be attempt to legitimise its existence. I think it's here to stay.

I don't think the fee is the same, I'm pretty sure it was reduced, at least for the bulk transfers if not ofr individuals. I'm sure someone will remember better than I...

I think it was reduced before the new system arrived, not certain though and also can't remember how much it used to be. I have £25 in my head for some reason???

I think that if it was free it would be open to abuse, but I do feel that £5 would be a better figure. It would certainly boost the sales of low value domains and for that reason would probably increase the number of registrations.

Like others I don't expect it for free, but £5+VAT for a tranbsfer is much more palatable when a company is not fighting for it's life financially and has an electronic system in place that now works to do the transfers.

increase the number of registrations

I personally think it would too.

I think it would be worth finding out the justification from Nominet of the price. If it is because of the investment in the technology then at what point will it break-even and therefore enable a reduction in price?

Haven't they been making a profit and considering giving this to charities or funding innovative Internet projects? As it is supposed to be a not-for-profit entity, I believe the obvious solution for reallocating excess funds is to reduce the fees they charge to benefit members and the public. Of course now that they have taken control away from members I don't imagine this will happen.
