I've never liked doing what I don't wish to do but someone wants me to prove who I am before a domain gets sold on. So I have to go to a solicitor (they're paying) and show them my passport and a bank letter to prove I am who I say I am, they'll do photocopies etc.

Now I'm going to do this tomorrow against my wishes so as to get the money, I've put it off for a week as I really really don't like doing what I don't want to do, I'm not a foreigner, not an asylum seeker and I'm not a crook.

Has anyone else had to do this and is there another way of proving who you are without jumping through hoops like a circus clown for some jumped up bugger on the other end? I really aint happy about doing this but I've decided I'll do it tomorrow.

I've got the raving bloody hump about it but I want the money otherwise I'd tell 'em to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

No ones asked me yet during a sale. But then I always state I'm a tag holder and point them to my details listed on Nominets web site. So in a sense I do prove who I am before we finalize a sale.

If I were a large corporate buyer spending a lot of bunce on a domain name then I would probably do a few things to check that the buyer was who they claim to be and that I wasn't going to get ripped off.

This is one thing to do as part of that I suppose. Is it a large corporate buyer, is it a lot of money?

However, putting my tin foil hat on, maybe it's not all what it seems....

It seems a bit extreme, unless its a good deal I wouldn't bother..

I don't think I would do the solicitor thing though.. unless the payout was enough to retire on :p

Apparantly the business buying it is worried about money laundering laws.

I'm getting angry now, I think I should go to bed and just walk out of the house in the morning with the papers and phone to say I'm on my way otherwise it's in danger of falling apart over this little game.

Or if you know a justice of the peace, doctor etc.

It is a fairly standard way of identifying yourself, I've had to do it before but not for domain sales.

You see that's another thing, although they're solicitors I aint happy about having my passport photocopied, what if they get burgled? Up until two years ago I never had a passport, what then? madness. It's doing my head in.

Do you have a solicitor that you know, that can vouch for your identity?

May be worth checking out how genuine the buyers are if you haven't already. I've had a fake offer made on one of my domains last week via namedrive. It was supposedly from a well known large UK company, the reply email I sent back didn't bounce back but after sending another mail and hearing nothing for a week I rang the number they supplied. The company had no record of the person who had made the offer??? Very weird.

It's all real and I'm sure all legit, I just find it a liberty. I'll do it tomorrow, I just don't like doing things I don't want to do. It didn't help that the buggers dragged it on for two unnecessary weeks, so I thought "I can play at that game" and dragged it on for another week haha

For peace of mind, (as aqls mentioned) you could insist on using your own solicitor for verification...

I'm always paranoid about giving away my details and in this case I would definitely not do it, as wwwdomain quite rightly said it could lead to ID fraud.

Have you got a verified paypal account to use (as you would have already proved your address and banking details to them)?

I would not do it on principle.

Tell them you want copies of their passports and a bank letter too.

If they want it they will buy it anyway.

You sure domaining is the 'game' for you... it seems it causes you a fair bit of stress :(

It's not a game, it's a side business of affiliate marketing. And it doesn't cause me stress I just find more and more people taking liberties these days, if they want to buy something, just bloody buy it. It's not a car.
