Rubbish Paypal system, there must be something better out there

Tried to send money through paypal today and got rejected, because my sending limit is 0?

So I decided to give them a call, and I got this silly American woman, saying because my account is not verified. so I asked her how did I use the account for all those years and now I am not verified?

Without getting any further with her I decided to hang up and follow their procedure, then I realised I verified my account years ago, and their system must have had wiped my data out.

Why don't they put anyone with tech knowledge on the phones?

I know alot of people slate paypal but ive found them to be very good. I once got ripped off on ebay for £400. The listing clearly stated I was only covered upto £50 with paypal but they gave me the money back anyway, out of their own pockets!

Give the UK number a ring and explain to them that you have followed the steps and your limit is still not raised. The should sort it pretty quickly.

I have mixed feelings about PayPal. I use them almost every day with my shop and the service is generally very good. I do have to say though that last year I sold some goods to Viet Nam. Normally people may advise to avoid Nigeria, Viet Nam etc, but I have sold quite a lot over there with no problems.

I waited a few days just to give PayPal a chance to check the transaction, then I sent the goods (£150 worth). Within a few hours of sending the goods, the funds were put on hold and were then reversed. After completing the normal procedures and contacting them I was told that I was covered under their protection policy and that I would be contacted; I wasn't! I then phoned and emailed about 10 times over the next few months until eventually the case was reviewed and I was told that I should have responded to their requests (which I didn't receive). Finally after several more phone calls I persuaded someone there that I was entitled and they eventually paid up just over 3 months from the original transaction. Later in the week I then received a call from the same guy who told me to "accept his apologies on behalf of PayPal" and that was the end of it. I am glad it worked out eventually, but I hear so many cases of it going the other way.

There are other, similar services, like PPPay and Nochex, but PayPal is the most widely used and therefore for customer convenience I will probably stick with it for the time being.

Thinking back there was another case where I lost out on a tenner, but I was just chatting with a friend who says that he lost over £400 in several transactions in the last year through PayPal reversals. I remember a year or so ago someone lost several thousand pounds then took PayPal to court. I believe that he won, but was banned from PayPal, although I can’t remember where I read it. I have also seen many cases regarding domains as PayPal do not cover intangible goods and therefore many people have been scammed.

no point singing up another one, I might as well verified it again so no payment via paypal for a few days, i knew something was wrong when godaddy won't accept my paypal payment.

I know there are other ones out there, but like what alex said, paypal is the one most people use, guess we will just be buillied by them without any choice

Usually they are good with buyers buying on ebay, but I had bad experiences with them recently, where the sellar sold me a fake, then gave me a addresss the return to. so I did't but he never signed for it and returned back to me. Called up Paypal they were in favour of the fake seller. £60 gone :sad:

don't want to complain too much, but I think they're changing a bit too much for such a poor service. especially the customer services, this is the 3rd time paypal messed up with and stopped me paying this year. This is too much. and their helpline isn't free either from a mobile.

We've all been asking for something better for years. I hate paypal too, but there is no decent alternative except don't use paypal.

I tend to keep my paypal transactions below £100 if I don't know the buyer/seller as I was stung in the past several times, and there is basically nothing you can do about it.

They are rolling it in with fees, currency conversions etc.. Genius idea, printing money like google.. No idea how folks have let paypal get away with it for so long, but I'm in no position to challenge paypal, so I still use them

Paypal can be a joke, but theres no alternative.

I sold a busted laptop on ebay clearly listed as "Dell laptop spares or repairs" in the title and the listing. Guy won it then complained it didnt work, WTF a !

Paypal went in his favour, he sent it back but didnt send me the power supply which was the most valuable bit as that worked !

You guys know that you can get a merchant account from RBS worldpay for £125 +100 a year.

I have done over £400k in transactions on it and chargebacks equal £0

It tells you the risk factors on each transaction and you decide whether you think you should send, you don't get that with paypal.

Hook the merchant account account up to joomla and you got a shop going in under 3-4 hours, or just code the cart yourself.

Personally I don't know what I would do without it.

Yep I had a quick look at that before worldpay and quickly went with worldpay.

Wordlpay is aimed at the home / small business user and easy to code.

Barclay's weren't cheap either imo

There used to be a way with RBS and affiliates to get a "free" service for a merchant account - only hassle was that they kept your cash for 90 days before they released it to you!

The good things about Paypal are that the charges are competitive, and there is no "up-front" charge.

The things that make me think -
In the first place, Paypal was a nominally UK registered company, although it was de facto operated from Nevada so that they could avoid the UK Data Protection Act re. the personal details stored on their computers.
So they moved their corporate registration to Luxembourg a couple of years ago - why?

I've had some relatively trivial disputes with international deals on eBay, before the company officially moved to Luxembourg, and getting info was like trying to shove butter up a hedgehog's bum with a needle.
The Lord only knows how cryptic they can get these days - they were like a Swiss bank before they moved.

At least with something UK based you can ask "hard questions". That said, I'm still using Paypal - it is convenient.
