I recently registered a .com which I parked with sedo. Couple of days later this guy emails me asking if I wanted to sell it. I named a price and he said sounds ok but wanted me to get an appraisal to see if my valuation was reasonable. He specified that the appraisal had to be from a decent company and then went on to name ones which he said overated domains and kept quoting one in particular as the one he trust's.

I said i'm not too bothered about selling and couldn't be arsed to get an appraisal but he kept coming back and mentioning appraisals and a particular company.

It got me thinking the guy is linked to the appraisers and was trying to get a sale out of me. I told him i'd changed my mind and it wan't for sale.

Anyone else had similar happen????

Yes, this is a scam.

People are commonly targetted on Sedo with offers to buy a domain on condition that an appraisal is done. Normally you'll get directed to a site that purports to show a number of companies offering appraisal services. The one which the scammer is associated is always the cheapest. You pay for a pointless appraisal and they never come good on the offer.

It can sometimes be difficult to assess how much a domain name is worth, read around the forums and see http://www.dnjournal.com to get a better idea.

I seem to remember a similar post a few months back - nice to know these idiots haven't given up

an appraisal is not a selling price
a domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it
whether it be below or above the appraisal

I had only registered it a couple o days before! I just said a grand and he said ok. He then comes back with his appraisal speil. I said there is nothing to appraise!!! no traffic, no type in value! but he kept on.
He said he was from an oracle application development company or something. So why use a dodgey free email address like bonbon.net? if your from a company?
