specializing in certain categorys

Hi,

Ive been thinking about registering more domains recently, ive always reg'd a few with the intention of developement and never got around to it. Now i'm thinking about regging domains in certain categorys and concentrating on just those instead of getting anything that my weird old brain thinks is good.

So the question is are there any people that just specialize in certain categorys e.g. only regging domains about cars or about computers etc? and could this be profitable if you spot trends quick enough?

I think this is a smart move. Over the last 36 months I've been buying names in multiple sectors hoping one day to get around and develop/do well in them. However, you have to ask yourself at the end of the day are these REALLY all going to get done and can you maintain interest/link building/promoting for all the different niches.

Last month I decided to try and focus all my efforts and go for one niche. Any other domains you own can be renewed fairly inexpensively and put on the back burner but whilst you are in the 'zone' you may as well target one niche and most importantly do it well. Give it say 6 months to a year and by then you should either love it or hate it and move on. It's self discipline at the end of the day, but I believe if you work hard on a sector eventually it will pay dividends. Too many thin/undeveloped projects just won't cut it nowadays so it will pay to focus on what you are good at & the sectors you enjoy working in.

If youre going to specialise in a niche market then do ensure a few things - that niche is something by which searching online is one of the top drivers that the regular man in the street would use to find such service/product.

Furthermore, ensure that the niche market has legs and that the net gain to you is worthwhile. By this i mean, market volume, net unit sale, logistics of you getting paid, market share you could command vs your investment and time. Also, with niche markets, have an exit strategy i.e. if it goes well what do you want to do with the business - decide this at the outset. And lastly, dont make the regular mistake of diving into a market which already has strong elements of the points I made earlier and for which everyone and their uncle is already doing, and doing well. Flights, insurance, injury claims etc.

Ideally, find a market which you are already personally interested in and find one of those few remaining markets where the established leaders are still internet naive. There are a few i notice from time to time, most recently Ship brokering and consultancy.

thanks for your replys guys, but I was asking the question from a purely domain reg point of view, my track record shows I am rubbish at developing domains so I was thinking of regging domains in a certain sector with the intention of being able to sell them for profit if that sector becomes one that people are looking for marketable domains.

Ive seen many posts on here from people asking for domains to do with such and such e.g. motoring, apps etc and wondered if its wise to limit my domain regging to such trends?
