Sorry if this is a daft question. It is clearly some sort of scoring mechanism but I can't work out what. I have been to inventory.overture.com but I am still not clear. If I put in 'domino' it returns 58,960 searches done in November but I am sure this is not the 'overture' for domino.co.uk

Could someone please put me out of my misery.

Thanks

Chris

Thanks Decon'

Now I know how to get the score but I am not sure what it really means. domino.co.uk has an OV of 309 which feels good but what does it mean to me?

Chris

p.s. I am assuming there are others with the same questions in their heads

Hi eetc

everyone has to start someone and its good to ask questions.

overture takes the search results from various "partners" and collates the information.

so when you search for domain-name.co.uk in overture its telling you how many times someone search for that domain name on those search engines during a single given month.

[ see http://www.content.overture.com/d/UKm/ps/ps.jhtml ]

So if a domain name (with extention) gets 80 then its gives you a very rough and inacurate indication as to how much traffic the domain "might" get.

Its a very very very rough and inacurate science and you learn to take all the results with a pinch of salt.

hope that helps, other members please feel free to add or correct my post if its incorrect.

:)

It means that someone/s typed in "www.domino.co.uk" 309 times in Nov 2005 into the search bar of yahoo.co.uk, msn.co.uk, ask.co.uk plus some other search engines but not google.co.uk. ie, the ones that Overture quotes in its blurb. [Btw, 309 is pretty good.]

This can be taken as an indication of how many people may have typed "www.domino.co.uk" into the address bar of their browser, assuming that those typing it into the search bar may have intended to have typed it into the address bar.

This is then an indication of the amount of direct "type in" traffic that a domain name gets .... the higher the number, the more valuable the domain .. in theory.

Watch out for hyphens.... the OV results can be misleading for hyphens. It seems that people quite often type in separate words, no hyphens in between and on the last word they stick on .co.uk ... I've wasted a few reg fees finding this out :(

Have fun finding high OV rating domain names ... many people spend too many hours searching for the illusive one that will make a bit of money :???:

EDIT:
I take too long typing ... good reply above!

nice reply luke.

i forgot to mention what the results mean in terms of it indicating how much direct "type in" traffic that a domain name might get

the results can also be "fixed" i have seen domains that have always had zero ov spike to 500 then drop to zero again.

as i am posting again will reinforce a point.

Take all results with a pinch of salt. i have domains with NO ov that get more traffic than domains with reasonable OV.

Also ov scores can jump around month by month. ;)

Getting better. domino.co.uk is probably my best so far.
