As everyone now knows having backlinks to your site is good, its also pretty straight foward on how to get that done.

But what actually makes a good backlink.

Ive seen some links will be displayed like this

<a href="www.page-name.com">this is a little about my page</a> - and here is some more

and others will have

<a href="www.page-name.com">www.page-name.com</a> - and here is some info on my page.

Ive been using the lather.

The reason I ask is because I have a webpage that people have linked to, Ive also exchanged links etc but alexa still says zero for backlinks.

So is there a difference between backlinks and links?
Also is it better to be consistent with your link?
Should it be what your meta description is for better results?

Sorry for all the questions but they all relate to the same thing.

The 'best' link would be a link from a page on another site that is related to your topic, in context - eg:
Page about your topic
Here is a paragraph about your topic where they discuss various things to do with your topic and within the text link to you using your <a href="site">keywords</a>, while also mentioning other related terms

However the style and position of the link on a page isn't the only thing that matters, but the level of trust the linkng site has earnt, and how relevant the site is to your topic.

The best tool for checking backlinks is yahoo - type linkdomain:yourdomain.com into the search box to see all the backlinks.

Use always this format
<a href="www.page-name.com">Your Keyword Here</a> - and here is some more

No one's mentioned the title attribute - is it no longer imprtant?

<a title="Some related title text" href="www.page-name.com">Your Keyword Here</a>

I'm not saying it's no longer important but I do not use title attribute.
I just use this format:
<a href="www.page-name.com">Your Keyword Here</a>

No one's mentioned the title attribute - is it no longer imprtant?

<a title="Some related title text" href="www.page-name.com">Your Keyword Here</a>

<a title="Some related title text" href="www.page-name.com">Your Keyword Here</a>
The value of title tag for plain text link is close to 0
It is very important to use the alt tag if you use image link
<a href="http://www.site.com/"><img rsc="imag.jpg" alt="keyword"></a>

Agreed. adding description/keywords in alt tag is useful so that search engines would recognize what the image is all about because they do not read and understand images.. It's also helpful to visitors so that they can see the detailed information of the images and make them more familiar...

The fact is it wont actually 'hurt' your SEO. Therefore if you're happy doing it then just continue. However as others have said, it doesn't add weight to your SEO by adding it on.
