Funny that we now have a LuckyLord and LordAlmighty!

All with decent feedback levels too. Not sure why existing members are doing this!

Who's getting mugged? The buyer or the seller?

Good UK domain names don't come along everyday... not even on DL.

LordLucky is like a man with tenner's hanging out of pockets walking through a group of pick pockets. He's only got himself to blame but there's plenty taking advantage.

As a seller, I don't mind :D

It takes more than one bidder to drive up an auction's price.

It's not like that at all. He's actively bidding and buying names.

Who knows what his investment strategy is, it might well turn out to be a very savvy one. He's clearly done well for himself already

Come on let's be honest here. DomainLore is awash with second rate single word domains. He's being targeted because he's acting like he's got more money than sense.

He's a property developer who's buying domain names, I'm not seeing the link?

We don't know why he's buying domains.

We do know that he's successful and that it's possible to own and be involved in more than one type of business.

Fair play to him, may just be looking to diversify his business assets (as was my original intention) and possibly has decent knowledge of this sector. I just hope that those competing with him are of sound mind and not riding a wave...

Of course, he can have as many businesses has he likes but being successful at property development doesn't mean he's got the midas touch and can turn his hand to anything.

I voiced an opinion that I stand by but I recognise that I'm in a tiny minority and that I'm never going to win the debate which is why I said I'm not change anyones minds.

I do get what you're saying but value is subjective. I wouldn't have paid £3300 for stage, but I don't think mascot.co.uk at £888 is a bad buy. quarters.co.uk at £300 currently is a nice name for property development and so on. Unless we know what someones plans are it's hard to know if they're making a good or bad move.

A name like ten.co.uk is worth much more than £4k to the right end user. I don't see a problem with the prices he's bidding at.

As far as I can see it's an investor looking to grow a premium portfolio, with the cash to back his ambitions.

As for quality of names. I can see two semi decent names on DL at the moment, the rest of them fall somewhere between mediocre and shit including the one I'm selling but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I'm just offering my opinion and not looking to change yours or anyone else's.

I'm surprised that you have such a narrow minded view Sean. I also doubt if the buyer appreciates his purchases and business acumen being ridiculed in this way.

well, whoever he is, good luck to him - it's fair to say he's rejuvenated DL auctions somewhat, although yeah it does take at least two to do that.

Just needs to start buying premium names then :)

Cant think of many he's bought that are not premium.

I don't really get why your talking the market down either.

Isn't it a good thing that domain sales are starting to gain momentum after the last few years.

The risk here is that it will go flat once he's had his fill of domains (possible negative impact?); there's no chance those trying to compete with him will sustain that level afterwards.

I had an interesting comment from a domainer the other day. When I asked why they bid on a certain domain, they said because they knew LordLucky would pay more so was just messing around. Considering that domainer wasn't going to profit from a higher price (wasn't their domain), I wonder whether each of us have a very unique perspective on this new buyer to the market.

It takes at least two bidders though

If they were a bit crap he would be able to pick them up for £50 a go

For it to be legitimately shady there would have to be shill bidding added to the mix, which I'm quite shocked Ian has suggested above that there has been.

I have only occasionally looked at the bidding on domainlore but I did wonder if a few people were doing this. Who knows if this is a more sophisticated version of shilling.

No, to be fair, on this particular occasion I think it was just someone 'having a laugh', knowing that in most circumstances LordLucky will be the higgest bidder, but I think it is a very dangerous game to play. My point being, that whilst it takes 2 bidders to increase an auction price, I feel that maybe some are just those bidding because they know they won't win, though personally don't find a logical reason for doing so, especially when said person doesn't have any investment in the domain.

You would be crazy to risk your DL reputation 'for a laugh' if you have any intention of staying in this business.

Spending a k or two over reseller value on premium domains is really not such a crazy plan - much more sensible than spending thousands on renewals of large portfolios of low end stuff that might never sell - IMHO
