Given the bloodbath this week who is jumping into PPC to secure their futures and who's gonna try stick it out with SEO??

Where is the none of the above option?

Frying pans and fire!

nothing changes

Do everything Tom

ppc
seo
email
social
etc etc etc

Doug

Spread yourself between everything. Eggs/baskets etc

I agree with the above two comments. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Better to cover all of your bases.

PPC is no easy route either, with the big boys often willing to make a loss per customer acquisition. Listen to Doug, do everything, that's my intention this year (and that's coming from someone who benefited in this change).

I turned off my adwords campaigns on Tuesday out of spite - but Doug is right, if you want something to succeed now you probably need to be ticking all the boxes. Will probably have to go back and renable them soon!

Still, I think SEO is still a viable option if you can work out the right balance - far fewer competitors to pass by, and plenty of opportunity if you're the first in your niche to work out what comes next.

A bit early to make conclusions whether SEO rules or not, potentially it might have got easier..

I'll still be concentrating on SEO and social but will be considering more carefully the links I go for. I will definitely be putting a decent budget into PPC on my latest project which is something I haven't done before properly.

If google is your main source of traffic then it makes sense to have a site that is profitable through PPC.

People see PPC as spending money but it's not, it's a way of generating extra profit. If you invest £100 on PPC and get £1000 in return you're not £100 down, you're £900 up.

Every week I spend as much as I can on PPC as with a highly targeted and refined campaign I know that for every £1 I spend I will get £xx back, the more I spend the more I make.

I do SEO as well but knowing that my site is profitable through PPC alone, which fits in with Google's overall business plan, means I'm not always checking rankings and never worrying about being canned. Who needs the stress?!

This is true but it really depends on the niche. When you're having to pay £5-10 a click, you need to have a pretty amazing conversion rate just to break even.

Yes but the CPC is dictated by the market, all the other advertisers wouldn't all be paying £5-£10 per click if it wasn't worth it to them.

If you naturally rank #1 on p1 of google is there any benefit in using PPC ?

Would you get more clicks to your site by having your ad (amongst competitors) top of the page & the 1st 'natural' listing?

#1 organic only gets 35-40% of the traffic, that 60-65% goes somewhere else. PPC gives you more chance of getting the click.

Yes. Studies have shown this boosts both PPC CTR and organic CTR too. I'm on my iphone or I'd give you the references, but if you Google around a bit you should be able to find them.

Interesting, thanks both.

Any tips on how to best maximise your adsense investment

Not necessarily. If you're in a niche as an affiliate where you only get paid say, 20% rev and the actual service provider gets 80%, they are able to bid 80% higher than you to break even. This is why it's so important to pick the right niche/model when endeavouring in PPC and why currently, PPC isn't much of an option for me.

IMO (sorry to sound really argumentative!) #1 gets less. The AOL stat was 42%? but that was years ago before Google changed the ad backgrounds to white to fool the unaware into thinking they were clicking on natural results and I get the feeling click patterns have changed since then too. I could be wrong but unless my top ranking website domains are really putting people off, I should be getting way more more clicks than I am!
