Hi. I'm Gerry, from Wiltshire.
I'm new, and probably have made the usual newbie mistakes. I seem to have splurged on too many .co.uk names with hyphens in. I have parked them on sedo. I haven't a clue whether they are worth anything, or not. Here are a few, (I don't know if they are my best, or my worst. They could be either!):

hot-celebrity.co.uk
fun-pic.co.uk
funny-animals.co.uk

also a .com:
casinoslotto.com

??? There are more, but I don't want to embarass myself too much, just yet.
Cheers, Gerry

Welcome to the forum. Your domains aren't too bad, I've seen a lot worse!!

Hi Gerryb,

welcome aboard mate,

hey there not bad names, I think I read somewhere that hyphens in names does'nt really matter (but don't quote me on that).

Hi Gerryb, welcome! Hyphenated domains are fine - need to develop them - i.e. put something on them ;)

Thanks for the welcome, all.
Funny,I've just been reading the Making a Domain earn £1 a week thread. My head is buzzing. Don't know what to do, now.
I was kind of wondering how parking domains would ever make any money. Surely these parking pages don't get ranked on google. How would any one end up on one of them?
If I typed "hot celebrity" into google, for instance, surely 2,000,000 sites would come up before you reached a parked domain.
Or am I missing the point somewhere?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

You have missed the point there yes. Not everyone visits a web site by typing in a keyword phrase into a SE. Users often type in the URL of the site into their address bar. People will visit paked pages if they either mis type a common web address or guess a web address. E.G. Someone looking for info about stag nights out may have a guess at www.stagnights.com (and yes this goes to a parked page).

So parking is good for domains that receive natural traffic, or as a platform to advertise and sell your domains. If you have a domain that has strong keywords but gets little or no traffic then a mini site would serve a better purpose. Although it is the general concensus at the moment that any mini site is better than parking a domain.

Hope this helps! :)

Rich :)

Thanks for the helpful replies.
Just one more thing, re. parking. How long after parking a new domain would you expect it to show any traffic, (if there is going to be any) before trying the mini-site route?
I might try a mini-site for hot-celebrity.co.uk. Sedo have put a load of links to porn sites on the landing page - is there any way you can opt out of them doing this?
Again, many thanks for all your help. This is a great forum.
Cheers, gerryb

Unless the domain receives natural traffic you wont see any rise when its parked. However, you can use parking as a way to test the domain to see if it does recieve natural traffic and / or test keywords for ctr etc to get an idea on what people are actually looking for when they visit.

Check your keyword(s) for hot-celebrity.co.uk in the optimiser, it may be set to something like 'free porn'... :)
