In my eyes this how I view the extensions available to us.

Number 1 .com
Number 2 .co.uk
Number 3 .net
Number 4 .org
Number 5 .org.uk

What do you think are the top 5 in preferential order.

Thanks

BTW, I would love to see someone release .cotton ;)

For me personally:

.com & .co.uk (joint first, depending on where you are, I prefer the .co.uk).

2. org.uk
3. net
4. org (I hate these, although did sell one once for a good profit!). :)

Bearing in mind I'm not a domainer, my top 5 would be...

Number 1 .com
Number 2 .co.uk
Number 3 .me
Number 4 .net
Number 5 .org

It's good to see non domainers opinions, I would love to do a survey for the general public to see what they think ?

Mine are

.co.uk
.org.uk
.com
.tv
.ca

Seems a bit odd but you must know what you're doing with them :)

Thanks for your replies people 8)

From an SEO point of view, assuming you only want to target the UK - my order would be:

.co.uk
.com
.org
.net
.org.uk

More than anything else, .net being 4th behind .org is purely a personal preference.

Mr preferences would be:

1. .co.uk
2 .org.uk / .com
3. .net
4. Would have to be desparate to pick up something else!

1 .co.uk
2 .com
3 ---
4 ---
5 .org/net/.org.uk

Yes, that looks about right :)

1 .co.uk
2 .com
3 ---
4 ---
5 .org/net/.org.uk

Yes, that looks about right :)

I like the gap from 2 to 5, does seem about right actually, I've noticed 3 other members have selected the same 5 as me so maybe I'm doing something right.

Thanks everyone 8)

I think .com will always be better than .co.uk

.co.uk is such a pain in the arse to say to people out loud "dot co dot uk" - people always seem to forget it even if it is a good generic.

.com just so simple and solid

I fully agree mate, you can't beat .com, I bet .co.uk as more leakage to .com more than .com as to .co.uk :?:

What always makes me cringe is when companies spend thousands, or even millions, on massive advertising campaigns promoting their .co.uk brand... when they don't own the .com.

Milk and More is the most recent example. They have TV adverts etc doing the rounds at the moment promoting www.milkandmore.co.uk (it doesn't work without www. either which is another major fail) yet they haven't bothered to purchase the .com - it just doesn't make sense. I'm quite sure they could have bought www.milkandmore.com for a few grand at absolute most before they started advertising. I can't imagine the amount of people who go to the .com after seeing the advert.

My #1 Picks:

Resale, International English Keywords: .com
Resale, UK English Keywords: .co.uk
Dev for a global audience: .com
Dev for a UK target audience: .co.uk

Other extensions (plus the above 2 with hyphens or numbers) can obviously have significant value, but I think that they should be treated with caution if you're looking to trade them at a profit or invest in site development.

I completely disagree with that, assuming you are talking about a website that targets a UK audience.

Peter > that does my head in aswell, using .co.uk and not owning .com
Also a site not resolving without the prefix www. drives me mad, it's so simple to sort out.

Also makes me think of this, I was at company the other day who just launched doing digital marketing, I heard her on the phone ringing about advertising the company and she kept say the companies URL by starting with www. surely a digital marketing company should know you don't need to say www. all the time

Ty > nice answer mate

I worked for a company director responsible for all ten of the company's websites. She didn't even know the URL of their flagship brand's site despite the fact it was just [companyname].co.uk and she'd worked there for ten years. She also thought all links had to be double clicked

Don't even get me started on the 'let's get rid of the website search bar' pitch...
