I had been watching this and going back and forth on bidding on it.
I eventually didn't bother as most of my dot com sales have come from America and China, but I still think it has some decent potential to build out.
What do you guys think ? Good price for what could be a nice brand? Or would you always prefer the .co.uk for British words?.

Although a one word dot com it has negative connotations. Cash advance site?

That was one of my thoughts
I was also thinking maybe, tips on saving money although I know Money Saving Expert is the clear number 1 in that field,so again that would be difficult.

I would think low price items, looking for the best offers, skint.com kinda thing. Maybe negative but can be a play.

I see where you're coming from regarding potential brand, but I don't think it would work in practice. Being skint does have negative connotations, and seeing that it means you have no money at all, anyone who is genuinely skint is going to simply be in a predicament and can't be a potential customer.

I would also say that people wouldn't want to align themselves with this brand. People don't want to admit they're skint.

If you want to help people that are finding it difficult to survive financially then this is a proven model, i.e. moneysavingexpert. In order to do this, I would advise choosing your brand carefully, and one that empowers people. It's something I've thought of doing but haven't got round to yet (lowprices is more shopping rather than money advice related).

We have already established that, anything useful to contribute in regards to what you think about the name?

Did you ? I must have missed that as I read the thread title as Skint.com sold $1600 where it should have read "Skint.com didn't meet the reserve price so didn't sell for $1600"

Plus the screens of it being a payday loan site were quoted as 'previously' where as I said 'there is curently a payday loan site on there'

Hope that clears it up

As far as the name goes, yeah I really like it and would pay somewhere in the region of $5-10k for it myself. I wasn't aware of the name being sold until you made this post, so thank you for drawing my attention to it :)

Im on mobile now so cant check. But if anyone here is looking to bid on the domain, i would strongly advise you to spend some time digging through the backlinks.

50 linking domains in Majestic and Ahrefs so it might not be dead.

If anyone is considering buying this, they need to get access to WMT. If its penalised, then run a mile. The domain is worthless.

If its not penalised then you really need to analyse the back links and see if you can clean it up.

I'm not feeling any value in buying this skint.com considering the dubious site / back links on it now, and the fact you're unlikely to be able to pair it with the .co.uk at even a semi sensible price.

You seem exclusively focused on SEO as a promotion method. You can always use other techniques to promote a site, e.g. social media, traditional advertising, YouTube etc.

That's because he made a monumental screw-up with Google himself and has since been dishing out dubious advice and aggravating rhetoric here since.

And all of the above are still going to be massively more interesting to a real brand if they control the main domain extensions.

Look at major brands and see how many of them own the main extensions for their name... its the majority of them...

top 10 car insurance sites :

gocompare.com owns .co.uk
moneysupermarket.com owns co.uk
tescobank.com owns .co.uk
confused.com owns .co.uk
swiftcover.com owns .co.uk
comparethemarket.com owns .co.uk
lv.com owns .co.uk
moneysavingexpert.com owns .co.uk
rac.co.uk doesn't own the .com

So every one of the .com not only own the .co.uk, but they redirect it to their main site. No real brand is going to want to only the .com when they're targeting UK...

You can't win them all - but I've had far more wins than losses. Like it or not, seo is what I'm better than everyone here at :p

With only 50 back links, even if it's penalised, I doubt it would be too hard to remove the majority of links and submit a request to google to remove the penalty, probably a couple of days work and then waiting for a response.

things like this are not going to be easy to remove - http://adizypudo.0adz.com/6-scotland-payday-loan-9.php

I think it would depend what you're putting on the site next. If you're putting a high quality site on it then those things aren't such an issue... if you're going from one shit payday affiliate site to another shit payday affiliate site I feel that its a major one.

Google won't lift a penalty until you actually do something else with the site... and when they see another crap affil site they are not going to help you.

So the solution is to copy the existing market leaders? And no other route is worth any effort? And we wonder why the UK domain space is full of homogeneous bland web services.

And why would people not want to align themselves to a domain and brand that speaks directly to their predicament? If you use MoneySavingExpert tomorrow do you become aware of who their other customers are?

Of course not.

Skint is bang on. Students might like it, young earners, plenty of people might have a curiosity factor.

...........

The downside is you'd need the .co.uk and .uk to compliment it.
