.UK Consultation meeting

Just because a domain is worth £500, doesn't mean a buyer can get it for £500. With no real pressure on the sellers to do anything due to the extremely low domain registration costs, he can list it for £2500 and hold it for the next 10 years if he wants. Great for the domainer alone... not so great for the general public. .

You're forgetting that just because a domainer is sitting on it doesn't mean it would be FTR, if it's a good name someone else would have registered it long ago, so johnny come lately who can't afford to buy it had no chance anyway.

Maybe you should be pushing for something like "if the domain isn't used in the registration period, the registrant isn't allowed to renew it"

But that would lead to problems like what constitutes use..

Personally I have no problem with domainers, anyone can become one and it's a got a good entrepreneurial spirit about it.

Plus there have been several proposals to increase tax on unused land, specifically to encourage it to actually be used. http://makewealthhistory.org/2013/05/15/the-case-for-a-land-value-tax/ Something like that would really be no different to setting domain registration fees to a level where it was more likely they'd be put to good use also.

The URL for the link you posted says everything about the bias being expressed - not "make poverty history" but "make wealth history".

In other words, a giant case of "sour grapes" by those who feel hard done by.

Without the possibility of achieving wealth, there's no aspiration. Without aspiration, industry is as broken as under communism in the Soviet Union.

What if the authorities in the area said were going to put up taxes on second properties to point were investment to make a profit becomes unfeasible because locals cant afford to buy/rent here. What would think of that idea would you be fine with that

I think that would be a good idea in some areas, generally I wouldn't be against them doing it. I wouldn't be happy if they done it to me specifically obviously, but in extreme circumstances I think the reasoning behind it is solid.

Is the UK namespace in need of such a extreme solution last I heard the UK leads the world when it comes to ecommerce

If something isn't broke why fix it.

I don't see how Nominet could justify any major price hike, bearing in mind its NFP status. There is always going to be a line beyond which accusations of abuse of position would be tabled, at which point the Government should step in and impose competition in the market. Whatever the current real cost it takes to administer domain names is, that will not change.

This is like getting up preparing for war each day, and then getting told to stand down..

Frustrating

Agree had appointments arranged with PR and lawyers at thought it would be released last week. Don't feel confident enough to rearrange dates.

Also have people standing by to analyse published feedback and have had to cancel their time.

Even if Nominet gave a date, so could get on with work until the decision is released.

If they release .uk late into this week, no answers will be forthcoming as they will be off to Brazil for ICANN conference next week.

So much for we at Nominet will be transparent and communicate more with membership!

I've given up checking. I assume the news will be all over the place as soon as they finally publish the decision.

when?

You can always ask by email or call Nominet to publish when they are going to announce .uk.

There is also a thread on Nominet forum that you could add to, last post this morning asked politely;

A date when such information will be released would be appreciated.

IMHO this is unacceptable and a disgrace, talk about trying to build bridges and get respect hmmmm the wall of silence is doing more damage to their reputation than the consultation itself.

agree with you. We're 13.5 months into this shambles and still no clearer. I think this has to be a deliberate ploy to demoralise the opposition - just let it drag on - they've got nothing to lose - they don't own domains - just draw a nice salary every month.

Nominet have clearly shown they're not going to allow themselves to be pushed into acting before they're ready, so I see not point in adding to an empty clamour.

Date for announcment

I reckon Thursday, just after dinner will be the moment the drums reach their crescendo and all us domainers fall silent for a minute or two before the door slamming or the drinking champagne begins.

But I must warn you I can't time boiling an egg so don't place any bets
I already thinking it could be tommorrow about same time...

They did say begining of november but they didnt say what year? Maybe that is the giveaway, they are going to do another year of v3 consultation and announce it next November 2014 :)

I would like to think they won't leave it until Friday. If many of the senior management are away next week, then it would be unfair to burden the rest of the staff with any resulting queries, questions and possible legal issues.

Having said that I know if it were me, then I would be inclined to leave it until late on Friday!

Nominet seem to have said

"we are going to interfere with your business plan, we don't quite know how but it could ruin your plans or it might be beneficial to you, it might cost you money but you won't be able to budget until we are good and ready to let you know what our decision is. We are going to mess about so much that you will be held in a state of uncertainty for a time you won't be able to define. We are going to ask your opinion which will encroach on your time and energy but we will, us few, make the decision that affects millions of people's business plans,".

This stinks, this is a blatant abuse of power.

but before all this - we'll arrange an auction and rake in £3m - then we'll make those auction winners sweat it out for a year or two.
