Not the most engaging communication I've seen - shame they didn't jazz it up a bit as I doubt if many will read past the first couple of lines.

They'd be better spending the time and money encouraging the top ten .co.uk domains to switch over, such as bbc.uk etc; the rest will then likely follow.

What would of been good is if they sent out this email before all the registrars had to the chance to email people with

"Pre-order your .UK today! don't miss out! act now to make sure we can secure it for you!"

That made it seem like you had to pre order and pay them a fee or miss out.. not that you had another 5 years

Thanks, there's some good data there. 14,902 .nz registered since the extension launched. Sounds like a healthy number given that there were only 476,818 .co.nz on the registry before the launch.

But isn't that figure for 1 day not two weeks? The table says "September 2014" and the .nz launched on September 30th.

An impressive start, and it's nice to see the registry being transparent with their reg stats. There's no excuse for a registry charged with managing a public resource to hide stats from the public or its members.

So why is .nz doing well? Did the .nz registry make a proper effort to inform registrants and the public before and at the time the extension was launched? Nominet in my view failed to adequately inform the general public (most of whom still don't know about .uk) during the consultations, presumably because the public's opinion was about as irrelevant to them as their own membership's opinions as they had decided they were going to launch .uk no matter what from the beginning and were just going through the motions.

But since .uk's launch there's been a really half-arsed effort at promoting the extension and not surprisingly there has been little enthusiasm to adopt it. I just wondered whether the .nz registry managed things differently and hence are now reaping the rewards.

Nothing on TV or Radio. Some website ads, but that could be targeted at me because I buy domains (cookie tracking). Print not sure, I don't buy that anymore

Could be bulk speculative activity, their is still a lot of good terms available in .co.nz, thus the .nz would be available.

Wait for the renewal cycle in one year to kick in, then a true picture will emerge.

The thing that stood out for me in .nz was the clarity of the information that the Domain Name Commission (broadly equivalent to Nominet - their site is at http://dnc.org.nz/) put out about the changes, both during the consultation phase, and in the run-up to it going live.

.nz isn't being dressed up as being something cool, different, for early adopters. And their information site benefits enormously from that, as it's focused on the information people ACTUALLY need to make a difference.

So I imagine that far, far more people who see the .nz site come away "informed" about what the extension actually means than the percentage of people who "get it" after a brief look at the Nominet site. Because let's face it, it's not a burning issue for most people so a brief look is all there will be...

True. We picked up about 25 .co.nz/.nz pairs soon after .nz launch for exactly that reason. That's more .nz than we own .uk at the moment

it's clear nom take a lot of lead from what's discussed on this forum, although everything they do subtly dressed up not to look like that..

so we only have ourselves to blame

I said in another thread, that there was an ad a few weeks back on 4 OD. It was a proper nominet one.

I still can't find it on Youtube, or any other site. It was some animation going on about how being shorter is better, and on the screen it had things like 'Compact Disc' merging to just be CD and other things like that, then .co.uk becoming just .uk

TBH, IMO, bit shit like, which may be why I can't now find it anywhere.
