Among names that dropped in the past 12 hours, which haven't been claimed, I'm kind of surprised these haven't been picked up: supercomputers.co.uk noughties.co.uk noughties.uk Not massive names, but I'd have thought someone might take them. I'd have registered them myself but I just don't have time to develop every name that drops. What do you think?
I am never surprised at a domain that drops without renewal. I either register it or it really wasn't worth having, hence why nobody picked it up. If you are looking at *any* available domain you think has value and not registering it either a) your business model is flawed or b) it really doesn't have any value (and deep down that's what you think).
Financially, I'm sure you're right, Rob. If it had been cars.uk I would have registered it straight off, because I'd know I could sell it for a huge profit. On the other hand, my interest in domains is primarily what I might use them for, as an end in itself, and not to make money. I think the Noughties domains could make a really interesting site, about favourite music in the noughties, favourite films, favourite TV, and events, including best sporting moments. It's just that I already have other projects on the go and I just don't have time to develop it. I realise I'm a bit the odd one out here at Acorn, being basically an ordinary internet user who wants domains mainly to simply use them. But I like it here, and I appreciate everyone's input and sometimes advice.
I was watching squash.co.uk which seems to have been held back for whatever reason. I really don't understand why this happens.
I'll be honest and say I picked these up, I like the idea of a noughties site (music etc and will do my best to create such a site) as for supercomputers I like that name but did not see it on my drop list. I am not what you'd call a serious domainer but I'm more if I like a name or it has a use in some of the projects I have I'll buy it regardless of any monetary value it likely hasn't got. Thanks again for posting these like yourself I see some value in these even if it's not the monetary type. I only regged these around 1.45pm, surprised no one else regged them before that.
squash.co.uk was not in suspended state so wasn't going to drop. A lot of domains are apparently held back because a renewal request is issued from a credit account that doesn't have funds to cover it. Very annoying. There were some members who did this in the past - was even more annoying to seem them registering new domains (how I don't know) whilst their domains didn't drop. Other reasons for a held back domain are domains that have requested to be transferred but haven't and are still in progress and then expired, and other billing issues which only nominet know and never tell.
Yes, I sometimes see names that have been suspended for over a year. Two times I just phoned up Nominet, and they said they'd sort it, and 24 hours later they dropped and I registered them. With regard to supercomputers.co.uk, that was an atypical one, because you're right starbird, 24 hours ago it wasn't suspended or anything, and I'd have noticed if it was going to drop, then today it just dropped, out of the blue. Maybe that would be if someone goes to their Nominet panel and just deletes it, thereby making it unavailable. Glad those domains could be of use to anyone! I do take Murray's point though, that generally speaking you start with a concept, and then you look to see if any relevant domain could be used. But sometimes I see a name is going to drop, and it triggers an idea.
I review the upcoming drops for the day, along with any that dropped yesterday, over my morning coffee. I will occasionally see ones that are worth picking up just for an idea or because they have potential to sell. Occasionally I'll pick one up just because it has lots of backlinks and there's potential to pick up where the last owner left off (adwayer.co.uk which dropped this week would have been a candidate for this, but somebody beat me to it)
Yes, that's more or less what I do. My wife wakes me up at 6.15, I make coffee, and then I focus on my targets. Sometimes unexpected ones drop. I reg'd one this morning - it wasn't on my list, but maybe I'd just missed it before - plonkers.co.uk That was an impulse registration, because it's not the kind of name I would usually reg, but something made me think it might be handy for political satire. Each day there are names which I don't want, but which I'm surprised are still unclaimed. So for example today: civilwar.co.uk just begs to be used by an historian tomboys.co.uk - I absolutely love it, but I know I can't register every name I love. And the .uk is untaken too. I think it would make a good brand. Or an information site... queer.org.uk ought to be picked up by someone, though admittedly its .org.uk
Gotta say I will likely take anything you don't lol. I was too tempted, so I thank you for posting such great names because you personally have no interest in them. I have much to learn because I cannot see any of those names in the lists I use. Civil war reminded me of brexit for some reason ...... Anyway, thank you, I have no qualms holding my hand up to any names someone posts and I reg them (though in this case for a family member). I just got lucky visiting the forums today
And today, when I noticed that Birmingham City Football Club had failed to renew BirminghamCity.co.uk, early this morning, and go to check it's still not taken, lo! Stitchbob has been up already and nicked it! Gotta be up early to beat ol' Stitchbob
They didn't fail to renew, it's never been used (or presumably owned) by them and googling it shows no useful historic content. I was surprised nobody was chasing it, since I only grabbed it as I happened to notice it dropped. I'm developing a couple of geo domains so I figured it might be useful.
It does amaze me, though, that with all the money and marketing in football, clubs don't protect their brand name. Anyway, it just amused me that you'd got in first ; ) Yes, I have a feeling that name could be developed in various ways. For a start, it's a major city. Secondly, the football club has a passionate following, even if the team has been doing absolutely crap for seasons.
Some of them do - for example, Stokecity.co.uk is owned by CSC Brand Protection so presumably owned by the club. I think a lot of clubs still see online presence as secondary though - remember that even a Premier League club probably only needs 10-20 admin staff for the day to day running of the business side of the club.
