September .uk drop discussion

so people have been claiming .uk domains long after they sold the matching .co.uk and also after the Ror passed via the Nom control panel? I didn't realise you could. If that's the case then we all predicted this kind of mess would happen when they were first talking about launching the .uk extension.

Unfortunately the last few days has shown how exploits and tipping off owners can have a destructive influence on the rest.

@Lovekraft - if i sold you Abc.co.uk a year ago (prior to ROR) and you didnt claim the .UK during ROR so fasthosts bulk register them all, meaning i still have access to that ABC.uk but not ABC.co.uk through nominets domain manager or through fasthosts and iknow ABC.uk is dropping today because you have not claimed or renewed the domain... am i ok to sell ABC.uk to someone else and not let it drop? No im not because i dont own the .co.uk anymore and i dont own the rights to the .uk.

In my eyes thats domain theft?

If the .uk is in your name via Nominet, what's the problem? It's yours to sell. The .uk could only have ever been registered to you if you were the registered owner of the .co.uk at the point the .uk was registered. All the other stuff is just a distraction to that point.

I thought you were joking when you said snakes, looks like you are really losing it

Just because the .uk is in your name does not mean you own the domain... Perhaps you just can't comprehend the fact selling something that WAS registered for the intended owner of the .co.uk... simply isnt yours to sell, maybe im wrong or maybe im not putting it across clear enough for you to dissect... But if i sell a .co.uk domain prior to ROR being released then the .uk is not legally mine nor would i have been able to create the .uk... in basic terms: fasthosts would have created the .uk on the basis they believed the seller still owned the .co.uk, therefore, that seller can access the .uk via email address but in reality the .uk should have been assigned to the owner of the .co.uk not the seller's email address

I say it again, Fasthosts could not create a .uk that does not match the owner of the .co.uk (listed at Nominet) at the point at which the .uk was registered.

What are people's views on the .uk extension? I always preferred the .co.uk but after staring at the .uk drop lists for the last couple of weeks I think i'm starting to prefer it. It does look a lot cleaner. Doesn't roll off the tongue as well as .co.uk though. Have any of your views changed on the .uk extension this September?

The .uk is miles better, it is just 25 years too late imo

I like it for some things, single word media type names is one, seems fresh

If it was a "trust me I'm an authority/institution" type site though then co.uk

I dont get whats happening ? Domains are being renewed last minute and then changing hands before they drop ? Is that right ? Sorry.... im a colon short of a URL it seems.

There has been some of the more desirable domains getting renewed late into the day they were due to drop. There is some debate over how 'ethical' the way this has happened has been;), the domain that triggered the debate (charlie.uk) was renewed then quickly changed to theTAG of a normally very vocal acorn member.

Thats about all I know.

Whats happening is, fasthosts are allowing people to add domains to their accounts and to renew. Guess it was part of their terms and as they are on expiry day ok to do.

Nominet came up with the rules and they were going to drop anyway, so ok for a free for all i think.

Customer service were asked if it was ok and they said yes, so up to the individual if they want to do it, just make sure you ask online chat to refresh domain after adding so you can renew.

I'd say happy hunting but its more like shooting a fish in a bucket

Why didn't I keep this to myself and make a mint, thats not me unfortunately

I am in no way condoning or encouraging anyone to do anything their conscience wont allow them to.
.

Are you saying that anyone with a fasthost account can login, and transfer someone elses unclaimed .uk into it, then renew it? Or just that specific person whose details the .uk was originally in?

anyone, as long as its on its on drop day or day before I think. so 11th or 12th drops for today etc

Wow, that is theft, pure and simple. It is their name up until it drops. If Nominet are allowing that then that is wrong.

All depends on terms, nominet have allowed registrars for years to take over domains if not renewed. Thats why its important to renew etc

could be worse, could be like .con and have to pay grace redemption fees etc
