Launched 12th January, over $20,000 in orders already and over 2.5 million uniques.

You won't believe this

Now then, if anyone here has a similar idea let me know, I'll build it for 50/50 split. :)

It's because it was on the front page of reddit the other day

It's had a LOT of good press

Will die out shortly, can't see long term good sales can you?

I agree. The seller is very smart to sell this site so soon, although a 5 day auction seems too long. Does that mean the bidders are incredibly stupid lol?

"Background: I’m a 22 year old entrepreneur "

"After being online for only a few hours, the website had received over 2,000 orders generating just over $20,000AUD. Somewhat overwhelmed, I then decided to take the ability to order down despite receiving thousands of emails & tweets from people wanting to purchase."

Somehow I don't think he's going to make it as a businessman.

Interesting! I really want to explore the whole viral thing. Can't beat it as PR.

The PR he received is literally priceless and the idiot took the sales process offline!

It would have been interesting had he left it up, wouldn't it? Lets say he took 1,000 orders an hour, so $10,000 an hour, close to a quarter of a million a day.

How long would it have taken for Paypal to shut down the account, and put all the money on hold?

They likely wouldn't shut the account but they would freeze withdrawals while they looked into it. You could then show them the up voted page on Reddit and quickly get it unlocked, it wouldn't be a major issue.

The problem is PayPal would be taking the risk on all the credit card payments. They unlock it, he withdraws the money then disappears into the night, then all the customers chargeback and PayPal is liable. For a few k they take the risk, can easily try to recover it if it goes wrong etc. For 250K in a very short space of time they would be a lot more concerned.

I see on my earlier question regarding the hosting, he was using a Media Temple account, which actually advertises that their hosting has "Reddit ready" bandwidth, at no additional cost. According to Reddit, they did manage to bring it down a few times however.

like how flippa have given the auction a custom glitter button for bidding !?

He's now had a further 3,000 people in 24 hours sign up with their email address for notification when orders are open again.

I realise the conversion the conversion rate for this would be higher than a real order, but still even at 1,500 a day that's $15,000 a day revenue. Pretty good.

The buyer posted a short interview on flippa, looks like he actually, sort of, knows what he was doing.
He already had a company in a similar business with set up shipping and warehouses etc, so he can just add it to his current process. So, who knows, this might be a good deal after all. If he can ship all those orders cheaply and the idea would stick, and not disappear quickly.
I'm still skeptical though, as there will be many copycats too.
