I just sent an email to a co.uk owner asking if they would consider selling me their .uk equivalent

I know they wouldn't sell me their co.uk because I asked a while ago, they have an active site on it and too much money.

The trouble I had when writing the email was that I realised I needed to explain what .UK was and that it wouldn't interfere with their use of the co.uk..

I'm not sure I did a great job

.UK domains were launched today, but only the .co.uk holder has the right to register their equivalent .uk domain name.

Since you own xxxxx.co.uk, I was wondering if you would consider selling me the new xxxxx.uk?

This would not interfere at all with xxxxx.co.uk, xxxxx.uk is a totally unique domain on its own

etc

I thought maybe I should of included a link to a nominet page explaining what .UK is but I didn't want the email to seem like spam

I doubt they will let me have the domain anyway

If you are wondering what it is, it starts with an M :p

If they don't email me back i will try ringing them and probably talk to a secretary who has no idea what I'm talking about.

A link to one of the news stories (newspaper sites) would probably be more meaningful to them than a Nominet link.

PS last line of your quote, tends give more away than starting with "M" :) which I see you have now edited ...

Thanks lol

realised a minute after I posted

Doesn't matter too much anywho, doubt anyone but me would be interested in owning it.

Wish I was interested in domains in 2011 to have got the co.uk, 2 years too late

Got to be a good idea if you believe that the .uk domain will eventually be the valuable one. Or even just more valuable than it is today. For some a few thousand pounds for something they didn't know about is sure to appeal.

If I can't have both (.co.uk+.uk) the wallet won't be opened.

Cant see why anyone would potentially sell a domain they effectively have rights to that could possibly be competition for the existing brand.

Obviously if they need explaining the new TLD is there and available to them it could well spur them in to registering it , while if it was left you might have been lucky and grabbed it in 5 years time ;)

A small business strapped for cash might take a few £thousand for something they don't really understand - some very very good domains are owned by firms that don't seem to have much turnover to speak of...

For me it would depend on how much money was being offered - if the price was right, I'd sell a .uk while maintaining a website on the .co.uk.

After reading this thread i went on a little hunt for my name .co.uk. If i thought i could get the uk cheap i would but i highly doubt it lol

I'm looking forward to the land rush in a few years whereby .co.uk holders didn't claim the .uk. There will be some brilliant names to catch.

Cheers
Dude

Essesential to get both .co.uk and .uk

I believe that its essential to acquire both domains.
When consumers become more aware of the .uk that will appear in advertising media that is once organisations complete registration and integration of the .uk equivalent it will become a standard.

I have acquired
CarInsurance.uk and Car-Insurance.uk that go alongside
CarInsurance.co.uk and Car-Insurance.co.uk

What when and how the market will turn will unfold in time.
