Is it me, or are there quite a few liquidating domain stock lately? Just wondering the reason behind this. Is it that the owners realise they won't be able to buy all the relevant .uks within the 5 year deadline?

I'm selling my domains purely to put the money towards funding an eco project somewhere in Europe, if it wasnt for that, I wouldn't be selling.

I'm "trying" to shift mine because I've lost pretty much all interest in it, no real reason though.

Wasn't aimed at anyone specifically, just noticed that's all! Started to think, if I owned 1000's of .co.uks then I would be thinking of the cost of adding all the .uks.

Quite a few selling off huge portfolio's at the moment. I can understand why.

There are some real bargains also.

I dont know why people are clearing their domains, if anything I think the market is picking up again, I have sold a good few domains in the last few months and got respectable prices, both end user and reseller.

and as for .org.uk, I paid £xxx for one today and as far as I am concerned it was a bargain, long live .co.uk AND .org.uk!

Snap up the deals while they are there...

I went through a heady buying splurge a while back. I focused on quantity rather than quality.

They certainly weren't dire names (or at least, even today, IMHO they certainly weren't dire names!). However, with hindsight, I feel that many were mediocre names. Collectively, they would involve a serious financial commitment to blanket renewals that I am uncomfortable with when faced with the reality of the renewal alerts and my personal cashflow.

So, I try to flog some of them and drop lots of them. They are pretty decent names, but not wonderful ones and not ones that I am keen to devote lots of time to developing.

I now recognise that many of my past registrations were what could (uncharitably) be classed as "stamp collecting" rather than based on intelligent evaluations of the value of the individual candidates.

So, I may accidentally lose some theoretically-valuable stuff through fire sales and drops. Meanwhile, I have sold two £xxx names within the last few days on DL and have obtained valuable feedback on AD about other recent failed sales. If the outcome is a "better" portfolio that avoids pointless renewals (regardless of some individual mistakes), I will be very happy.

I used to invest quite heavily in .org.uks but since the EMD change with G I've backed off bigtime. It's about serious sites these days, mini sites on an EMD .org.uk are a huge penalty risk, so the value isn't there like it used to be.

Where we're thinking of moving to, it's fairly cheap to live, and once I'm fully up and running there, I'll be producing the majority of our food, and be as self sufficient as possible, so anything I can bring in from leasing could cover a fair chunk of my initial set up outgoings, and after that period, money would be used for buying all the things needed to create a place built upon permaculture design principles, and from my own ideas for things to experiment with, for which I have absolutely loads of ideas for things to do.

Sounds interesting, what part of the world is it going to be in?

The value isn't there for people who expect to put a crap site on a EMD and have it ranking on page 1 in a few weeks :)

Don’t be so modest. Since I know you, you had great success at domain catching. Even before I got in at 2002 you been hoovering up top domains for some time with little or no competition.

I been exploring some of those communities myself, but I have no intention getting in one just yet :) I always believed you lived in something like that already in Cornwall.

So now you not considering doing similar things on internet you done up to now, while living there?

Lol... Well you used to be able to get away with it, not a crap site, but certainly a quickish one!! And on high value niches a long-term EMD was well worth the punt. That's gone to zero!! :)

Agreed 100%.

Too many people are still asking £xxx-£xx,xxx for domains which literally have a value of less than zero. Domain that you can't build a brand on & can't rank in Google = worth less than nothing, as all you can do is lose money failing at developing it.

Some people have seen the light and are trying to shit all over a greater fool and dump it on someone else...

place.co.uk
hotels.co.uk
placehotels .co.uk
hotelsplace.co.uk
hotelsinplace.co.uk
hotelsinplaceplace.co.uk

Where do you draw the line between some value and less than zero value ?

place.co.uk
hotels.co.uk
placehotels .co.uk
hotelsplace.co.uk
--------------
hotelsinplace.co.uk
hotelsinplaceplace.co.uk

Not only are people wanting good money for zero value domains, they're wanting the same money (or more) for domains which 2 years ago would send you to the top of the search results and now won't get anywhere. I think that's the biggest issue. Prices need to reflect usage opportunities / potential profit. A domain which would hit the top of the SERPs for "Place Hotels" 2 years ago with any old site thrown on it should not be valued the same in today's market when it no longer has this advantage.

To be fair, a lot of the .org.uk pricing has come down considerably now the ranking advantage has been removed. But keyword .co.uk have had the advantage removed also but because they're .co.uk they should hold their price? Nonsense!

Is it nonsense ?
The extension has a value, otherwise hotels.com would have the same value as hotels.me.uk

org.uk's would never have been registered in any great numbers if not for the fact they could be ranked, they were never a business flagship option.
