its a shame the government wont let us register their .gov.uk extensions. this is the first time i've ever found an available name with an ovt w/e above 10... and i cant even register it:

Since you can't register it I'm sure you won't mind, but I've told some contacts in gov't about this and hopefully they will register it and redirect it to the real site.

good to know jay. i was loking for a contact for them but there whois doesnt give a contact address and i didnt really know were else to look.

I think you are confused. Only the top one is being registered and these do not go through us. See here for details on gov.uk domains:
