Is anyone not going abroad this year because of the expense / credit crunch?

We usually go away in march and stay in UK for summer hols, this year we binned the abroad trip 'cos of costs.

We'll be off to the Gower (where we've been going for the last 7 yrs or so) & camping which is great fun :D (as long as it doesn't pee down for days on end, like it did one year lol)

I think there's a couple of members on here who live in swansea / close to the gower isn't there? we should meet for a pint and perhaps a little fishing trip in my little boat ......

Going abroad at some point will just book it last minute,

Sometimes I think it can still work out cheaper going abroad than staying in England,

can be true however not if you're going into the euro zone

We go away at weekends a fair bit and it usually costs us more for the weekend in the UK than going abroad for a week, and that's just staying in an average hotel etc.

I'm off to southern Spain tomorrow for a week with the GF.

The apartment we're staying in was £250 for the week and flights £80 each so just over £200 each.

I love the UK but don't think we'd be able to do too much for £200

Probably headed back to Tokyo for a while in the autumn. No plans for anywhere this summer, though.

Fish > I like the Gower peninsula, your own boat, I can only dream of having my own at the moment.

No plans for this year too much debt to get rid of but I did see 1 week in Greece for onkly £68 pp based on 4 sharing, cheaper than going to Scotland.

I'm off to Rome in three weeks and then hopefully somewhere else abroad in September or later (possibly Egypt). Only get 20 days holiday a year so have to make the most of it!

Struggling this year cos of the dogs :(

Only managed a fortnight in California so far. Trying to find a weeks holiday in Cornwall in a mutt friendly cottage but most are booked... doh

Should get a week in Egypt or Greece late summer then hopefully dubai/maldives xmas & new years tho :D

Dogs will be staying at thepawseasons.co.uk ..lol

Just landed in Spain and on the bus to Marbella.. Week off with iPhone 25mb free. On Vodafone each day. Also got my laptop, heard theres free wifi in my hotel..

Went to Malta in May, feel like I could do with another holiday though!

now that's what I call a holiday! I take the laptop with me too, just in case a client needs to contact me ;)

how do you rate Malta? me & other half spent 2 weeks there a few years back and vowed never to set foot there again

Just got back from Italy, I'm lucky enough that my parents have their own apartment in the Aosta Valley. Unfortunately they had the worst start to June for twenty years weather wise, including 12 inches of snow on our first day! Couldn't believe it, I didn't even take a jacket.

With regard to dogs, I've got a passport for mine and it's the third summer he's been to Italy with us, it's great!

We had one really good day for weather, which we spent walking in the Cogne Valley, probably the most beautiful place I've every been.

Seeing as the weather was so bad, I think we'll look to find a late deal for a week in the sunshine come the autumn, but that all depends on how well we're saving for the wedding.

Yep... totally pissed off with the pet passport situation. Sent dog no1 bloods off over a month and half ago now and results still not back. Got to get dog no2 done now. Reakon wont be taking them out the country at this rate till spring next year... sucks :(

It was one of my first "non American" holidays, so was a refreshing change.

We went for 1 week and could see how any longer would get boring. The hotel made the holiday for us, nice 5 star with sea view room etc. We just made sure to eat out every night and hit the casino a few times to pass time. Was really relaxing place and nice to explore! I would certainly go back for a long weekend away.

probably take the kids to centerparcs early summer, as expensive as abroad tbh but i'm not taking a 1 year old abroad. not inflicting all the travelling on her etc.

then probably newquay in a caravan with the lads for a stagdo. should be fun

york racing with the lads few weeks later. every year. love it

then kids away again late summer again uk

my only abroad holiday this year will prob be somewhere near a nice golf course ;)
probably spain

I stayed at the Hilton @ St Julians bay a few years back. Whilst it was nice enough, I dont think I would go back to Malta.

I went over to Portgal in May, Off to Majorca on Tuesday and Zante in September. Should be able to squeeze some city breaks in there too, I want to go back to Dublin and up to Edinburgh before Xmas.

Maldives in October for the wife's 40th

never been before, any one here been ?

Me and the girlfriend went as a blowout before we started saving for our first house, very nice and relaxing, but if you've got itchy feet like me, there were regular diving/fishing/boat trips and the 'house' atoll was awesome for snorkeling, swear I spent more time in the water than in the sea.

If you've not dived before, getting certified out there is cheap and it's a very nice way to do it, much better than diving in a quarry in England :)

Food was pretty good too, I never know what to expect with all inclusive. The barbecue nights where the best, which involved barbecuing whatever had been caught that day, never had a fresher swordfish steak!

How hard is it to take dogs abroad? Where do you even start with regards to getting passports etc.? Seems like the flight would stress them out?

Its relatively straight forward: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/

I just got quoted £1600 for a custom crate, full board, vets examinations for Bert to go to LA with Virgin Atlantic. Sadly no inflight movies or trolly dollies. IMHO those are trips not to be done regularly for the pet eg once in a lifetime... or worst case once every few years....

However we'll be using their passports mostly for travelling to the continent in the car etc so not much stress there.
