Now that v2 of the DAC is up and running, does anyone have any feedback on it?

hello jay.

nice to see you here.

Is the v2 stable now ?

Apart from some initial carriage return / line feed issues it seems very stable to me and much faster. A great improvement.

Any chance you can push the button and let that load of overdue prenom domains drop so I can give it a proper testing :)

Hi,

V2 is faster and more stable than V1. However, Blocking is an issue for me. Although the speed is 500 queries per minute I get blocked for speeds slower than that. I have a suggestion that just keep the 216K per day limit and let people use it how they like, faster or slower.

various replies:

1. Yes v2 is stable.

2. We do 500 per minute to prevent it being killed by lots of people attempting 5000 per minute.

3. If you think it is not doing what it says then please let us know. I have not heard of it blocking at less than 500 per rolling minute. I need to know what minute and what IP address. Note, sometimes the response speed is below 10ms, which is much faster than v1.

4. prenoms are working their way through. That's all I can say on that.

What change did you make to cut the response time from what was usually greater than half a second (v1) to less than 10ms? That's quite a big drop considering there's probably more people using the DAC now than there were when I last measured the response time.

Yes it is stable.

That means 1 query per 12 ms. And with that speed it means 43,2 minutes continous check quota. If people want a chance of getting a name 99,99 percent and if they have a server which can actually so powerful to send 5000 queries in a minute within that 43,2 minutes and stay out of the game for remaining 1,396.8 minutes let them do that! Besides V2 is not going below 20 ms. At least not for me. May be for some others (2 or 3 tags) it goes.

3. If you think it is not doing what it says then please let us know. I have not heard of it blocking at less than 500 per rolling minute.

I am getting blocked around 1 query per 100 ms. I opt not to give my IP here but my TAG is TURNIC-TR, which you can check the IP and logs.

4. prenoms are working their way through.

Prenoms are actually due.

I am insisting that let people check with the speed they want and just put 216K per day quota. (or even increase that 216K too or just determine certain time of the day solely for drops). Otherwise as you maybe aware of 99 percent of the recent drops go to 3 TAGS.

I also have this question which is asked by others. What is the handling limit of V2? What is daily average and peak number of queries for example yesterday? How did you determine that 120 ms speed? Do you have any comment on the fact that drops are caught by 3 tags and others are getting hot air. Do you explain this just by "their scripts are powerful than others". then I will say I am checking with 80 to 120 ms speed which is bound by your limits and still got hot air.

We completely rewrote the multi-threaded kernel. In particular this was to change the way it stores and accesses usage data. The algorithmic side is described here:

1 per 100ms means 10 per second, which means 600 per minute, which is why you are getting blocked.

Insist away but I do not intend to remove a short rolling limit for reasons already given.

That is information we are still gathering but no decision has yet been made on what we will release. I have yet to see the value in releasing anything other than average response speeds.

Three things to say to this:
1. 3 tags are not getting everything. There are lots of different tags picking things up.

2. This is now a very crowded market, with new entries all the time.

3. Some people are just very, very clever and extremely thorough in their strategy for catching names.

Hi Jay,

New version of the DAC appears to be a huge improvement. One thing I personally would find useful is the ability to find out from the DAC how much of my limit I have used up during the last 24 hours. ie. send "stats" to the dac and get back a message saying something like "201,232 requests in last 24 hours".

regards
Martin

I wonder.. before week ago most of the prenoms were dropping day by day by "rules" :) only few were left behind..

now they suddenly stopped and almost all of them overdue..

it looks like there is a reason rather than a chance?

Good idea. I will think about how we might do this.
