Looking up expiring domains

How exactly is this done?

I've got a TAG now and I'm presuming to look up expiring domains I'd need to use PRSS?

How do you actually compile a list of expiring domains though?

Or is this a secret?

You basically compile a list of domains you might consider valuable or that you know are currently registered, then use a program to query the DAC for each name in the list.

The querying the DAC manually looks like this:

shell> telnet dac.nic.uk 3043

google.co.uk

I think most people compile a list of words and then query them with .co.uk .org.uk etc

Ah cool, how would you know which ones are expiring, just by the dates?

Why not read the Nominet DAC pages, this is where the documentation is and you'll be able to see all the returned fields detailed for you.

Yes, but if you use the Time Delay DAC, there is a field for suspended (Y/N) which can make things easier.

As far as I know, there are no online services that scan for you, although Dale might be able to help you out with his system DCE.co.uk, I don't know if there's a version/package that lets you plugin your own DAC or not. Another option is to get a programmer to write something, wont take them long.
