Okay, having only had my tag for a few hours, I'd appreciate a bit of advice on my first task: moving my portfolio from Fasthosts registrar to my own TAG.

Do I just initiate a mass transfer for £10 via my Online Services, like I would have done before I had my tag doing an ordinary transfer?

Or is there a way I can just change the TAG manually without doing it that way?

When you obtain a domain, say, at UKBackorder or Domainlore, how do you old pro tagholders change the tags to transfer the domain to you?

Thanks for any advice! Siusaidh

Thanks, but I can do the Fasthosts end of it. What I haven't worked out is how to receive the domain in with my new tag. I can't see where on the 'Web Domain Manager' or the 'Tag Settings' I go in order to change the tag at my end / or accept the domain.

I have the box ticked for 'Handshake for Registrar Change' (or should I put 'Always accept'?). I don't know if that's relevant, but I simply want to know, with Web Domain Manager open, what I have to do - having changed the Tag on the Fasthosts website - on my Nominet interface.

Any advice please?!

When you transfer a domain from another provider you tell them to release it to your tag. Then if you have handshake set to always accept it will automatically accept the tag change. The domain will appear in WDM but if your have set to the other setting where you have to click accept.. on your registrar homepage you will see a message at the bottom saying accept xyz domain ..

As a newbie TAG holder as well, I assume it's a self managed TAG. If so when you buy a domain on domainlore, ukbackorder etc you need to add the sellers name as a contact, the domain will not be accepted until you do and you will not see the handshake. You simply delete the contact once it's all in your name etc. Just in case some of the domains you have are not in your name, or as mentioned you buy domains. This only applies to a self managed TAG.

You guys are so helpful. Thank you. Yes, I switched to 'always accept' late last night. The only reason I hesitated was I didn't know if that might involve any security risk, but that was probably just me being paranoid. I may do what you suggested, Ben, because it's so quick and simple just for a tenner - but I'm kind of experimenting with different methods to see how they work.

One other question - obviously I'm named as the tag holder on my account, but do I need to add my own name to the contact list before I start registering new domains, or is that just for third parties?

No security risk - the worst anybody can do is send you domains you don't want, which isn't a thing anyone does.

One thing I have seen when changing names is that Nominet will sometimes deny the change because it isn't a simple typo, so they want their chunk of cash. I tend to keep completed purchases in the sellers name for a short while until I have a batch to update, since once they're on your tag, you can move them all at once.

Thanks Stitchbob.

Just to pitch for one more answer: obviously I'm named as the tag holder on my account, but do I need to add my own name to the contact list before I start registering new domains, or is that just for third parties?

And a further question: can I register domains by simply a direct debit card transaction, or do I have to deposit a lump sum into my account first, and draw from that? I'll go and have a try, to see if I can find out, but if anyone can inform me, thank you as ever!

You have to have credit in your account to register any domains, there's no option during the registration process to use a debit card.

Not 100% on the linked names - I think you only need to add names which don't match your TAG name. If you buy a load of domains and find the seller can't transfer them all to you, it might be because you've got too many domains in a name which isn't linked to you (I think you get 5). In that case, add one of the sellers names as a linked name so you can get them all on your the tag, then you can transfer them all to you in a single hit.

Gah! I tried to register a domain as a test. Have money deposited first.

But I get this message:

Domain not created

  • V350 The operation would exceed the number of domains allowed on a self managed tag
How can my first registration 'exceed the number of domains allowed on a self-managed tag'???

Someone please rescue me from this universe...

Thanks Ben, yes I've established it is a Registrant name thing, and I've asked Nominet to sort this - I'm assuming I can just change the registrant name to my own via the Web Domain Manager. Hopefully everything will be fine in a day or two.

Your contact details are not correct, trust me been there ;)

Until is matches exactly you won't be able to register domains. By match exactly I mean capitals letters must be in the same place etc etc.

Look at your contacts, make sure you are there first (you can have 3 or 5 can't remember).

Then go to reg a domain, for contact, create new, place your name, company name etc exactly as it shows in your settings. If you do this and registers next time you go to reg a domain just enter the first letter of your name and search, it'll then pull up the approved contact info and it's plain sailing from there.

You'll need one domain registered this way before you can drop catch or it will not register.

In TAG SETTINGS you need to make sure the name associated with your tag, and your name take up two boxes in CONNECTED NAMES.

By registering in another name, or a name not on that list, the system thinks you are trying to hold more third party domains than your percentage allows. Fix that and you should be fine.

Once you can register, just move one of your least important domains from Fasthost or whoever using their tag change option, making sure the name the domain is registered to is in your connected names. Don't go paying Nominet £12 for what is a free process. Just move a few at a time.

Domains on your tag will always appear in the WEB DOMAIN MANAGER (that is the tag/registrar part). All domains in your email address will appear in the separate DOMAIN MANAGER at the bottom.

Well thank you to everyone who offered advice. It's all working beautifully now.
