Hot off the Nominet press:

Web-based forum consultation

We would like to improve member involvement and engagement with Nominet.
In response to the numerous and regular requests that we receive from
members and registrars asking us to replace nom-steer with a web-based
forum, we have decided to ask the membership as a whole for your opinion
on such a switch. There are a wide range of opinions regarding the
respective merits of email lists and web-based forums.

We are running a poll for a month from 29 August to 29 September to gauge
member feeling about this issue. Please complete the online survey on our
web site at http://www.nominet.org.uk/policy/consultations/forum to let us
know your views.

I wonder if the moderators will be elected or paid.......

I'm actually in favour of a web-based members forum.

However we know from our own forum moderation can upset people:

The idea of the Nominet legal team checking every single post and thread for what they class as "inappropriate" and then deleting a members question/post is not something i'd be comfortable with.

I would like to see an independent person employed at Nominet that has the power to run it.

Someone like Kieren McCarthy who now runs http://public.icann.org/ and maybe Nominet could have a public forum to.

Just like Seb said in his election statement:

** Participation: A new strategy **

Nominet has grown from a small group to almost 3,000 members and it's important Nominet adapts to better understand the needs of those members. It has already helped matters by introducing electronic voting, simpler consultation feedback and so on, but I'd like to see it take a leap by appointing an individual responsible for member and stakeholder participation, whose only role would be to pro-actively encourage and facilitate direct interaction through various mediums, both online and off-line with members and other stakeholders in a conversation, rather than a consultation.

Though I would like formal consultations to remain and promoted a lot more.

Quite agree Andrew - they should have one big forum that anyone can participate in (ie registrants, registrars, staff, etc) but also have separate private areas for (eg) registrars only and (eg) staff only.

Will be interesting to see what happens on this one as there is a lot of support for mailing lists within much of the nom-steer regulars (from what I remember). It's all to do with being able to download the emails and then read them at your leisure while on the train, taking a dump or whatever....

... You then build up enough anger/bile in order to compose a suitably terse response when you're next online.

I've never taken part in nom-steer or any of the mailing lists but I think forums are more fluffy and welcoming and so I will be taking part in those if they ever materialise.

Its a good idea and Im sure more people would prefer it to those hard to follow mailing lists that belong in 1996.

The big question is - can the Nominet tech team manage to install a forum without the need for a 3 week outage of the .uk registry!

:)

If it's simply nom-steer 'forumised' then members only is fair enough. But if it adopts a similar format and tone as is typical of forums such as Acorn, then it's a shame it will be self contained (invisible) to us non-Nominet members, and the internet at large.

I'm not sure too if it may dilute the more open minded & critical debate which can be found here. Members & non-members debating here in this open environment is surely much better than behind a cloak! Besides which, we can all enjoy a certain degree of annonimity here, beyond the reach of 'Big Brother'.

What I want to know is why is it a "take it leave it" consultation.....

If this really isn't just a way to moderate Nom-steer why don't they have nom-steer and a web-based forum as well?

I think it's because it's technically difficult - so easier to go with one or t'other. I think Jay mentioned it either on here or on nom-steer. Especially given that the technical resource is already stretched fairly thin.

Yeah but I mean run both as in seperate.

So stick a oracle forum on the website some where and leave nom-steer alone.

Perhaps the 'new' Nominet will put it out to tender, in contrast to some past contractual awards.
