software to protect kids online

just bought my son a laptop and he likes playing scrabble etc online, also has to do homework by looking up stuff on google. my worry is what he might find that he shouldnt see (even though I will be with him when doing this, you never know what might pop up!).

Can anyone recommend some software to block all porn sites etc and other malicious stuff? Dont mind if its subscription based or free or buy out right.

There's lots out there but not sure what to get?

right now its either me or the missus standing over their shoulder while they go online. currently its not that much or a problem as the missus has been doing all the standing

Could you just add keywords to blocked sites on the router? EDIT..Actually that could be a bit time consuming...doesn't windows have something built in?

i have a big thing about this ,i caught my 7 year old daughter on a site that was supposed to be printable colouring pages of animals and she clicked through and porn came up...very hardcore and i didnt realise until i heard it over the speaker on the laptop...

Found this looks all American but i've heard of a few of them but that K9 looks good ill have to remember that, my 3 (about to be 4)yr old is a little young for it all yet but he knows his way round a computer, poor kid has an IT consultant for a dad. Ah well. I did once swap his car and truck book for a PHP/MYSQL book, he looked at me funny..

Don't forget your router can also provide web filtering, depending upon the make and model.

I prefer this route as you don't have to set up something on every device and will also protect when using iTouch, Ipad etc as it blocks it for everything.

Log into your routers web-page config to check for settings.

I think that Net Nanny is still the best. It costs about $40, but at least they update their algo often. And also have a special "safe search" feature, that comes handy. (Not an aff link, btw )

I doubt anything will be absolutely watertight/foolproof. Things always find their way through. When using Google, I suggested appropriate adult supervision and education until he is old enough to cope with the pitfalls.

opendns.org set an account, point your router's DNS to their servers and you can control everything regardless of what the kids learn to bypass (unless they can override the IP settings, then by this time they'll be doing what they like regardless of what you put in place)

Why protect??? I have few nice aff sites. I can post a hosts.txt so big catalogue names will be forwarded to my sites
