Having problems with a domain transfer and I don't know what the problem is.

A few weeks ago someone tag changed a domain to my tag, which I accepted, but they only did the "release tag" part, and didn't enter any of my details in the "transfer" part before releasing to my tag, does this cause problems?

The reason I ask is, after accepting the name on my to tag, I went the Web Domain Manager >> Manage Domains scrolled down to the domain, now this bit I'm guessing, because what you can do is either click on the domain and click modify, or click the account number next to it and modify, I modified both, but after saving, whilst it shows my address, it still shows the original registrant who sent it to me as the registrant, and it won't let me merge the domain to my account, say different registrant name, so I added that registrant name to my allowed list of 5 names, still no joy with merging, gives the same error.

I released the domain back to the person who sent it to me, this time they entered my details after clicking transfer, and then released to my tag, which then went through normally.

I thought maybe it was just a glitch, as I haven't had someone do a tag change to me before without entering my details first before releasing. So, I got another domain tag changed to my tag a couple of days ago, and it's the same problem with this one, so I released it back to the other tag owner for them to enter my registrant details before releasing it to me again.

I've just had an email from then saying:

Not sure what's happened here. It usually works fine with a tag transfer.

The domain is currently in a bit of limbo. In my Nominet account under Web Domain Manager for my tag, I can see the domain which has me as the registrant, but you as the contact. From here I can't change the registrant, only release the tag. I've pasted the details below.

Under Domain Manager (as opposed to Web Domain Manager) in my account, the domain is not showing up so I can't change the registrant or do a conventional transfer.

So.... not sure what to suggest!!

Any ideas on what to do or what if anything I'm doing wrong when a domain is tag released to me?

I'm new to being a tag owner but I'm sure I do Web Domain Manager > Manage Domains > tick the appropriate domains > Transfer > Enter Registrant > Use Existing and then select my usual details.

P.S. I also find the nominet live chat support excellent in these situations!

Yes, that's the way I do it if I'm transferring a domain to someone, but this is something different.

It's not me transferring the domain, it's someone releasing a domain to my tag, but the registrant details weren't changed before releasing to my tag, and from there all I get is errors.

[edit]

I've used Nominet live chat one before, whilst chatting, they directed me to go to another section of the site, at which point the chat box vanished. I read someone else on here had the same problem when using chat.

Whenever I need to use any live chat (not just Nominet) I fire up a completely different browser (e.g. Chrome, when I'm visiting the site in Firefox) just for the chat session. That way, there's no chance of disturbing the chat, regardless of what I click on.

It was me who has the same chat issue! I tend to right-click open in new tab before following their ideas.

I'm happy for you to whizz me a domain over so we can replicate the situation to see whether my suggestion would work?

If a domain is transferred to your tag without changing the registrant details, you can't then 'transfer' the domain to your name via the Web Domain Manager unless you first go into the Tag settings and add the existing 'registrant' as a 'third party'. You can then transfer to your details, and remove the third party name afterwards.

Go to WEB DOMAIN MANAGER > MANAGE DOMAINS and the domain(s) will show, but in the sellers registrant details.
TICK the BOX of the domain(s) on the left hand side and then TRANSFER which is above the domain list, towards the right.
From there, select ENTER REGISTRANT, click CHOOSE EXISTING, click SEARCH to bring back your full contact list, select the one you want and complete the process.
If you experience any issues (which you will), you may need to add the current registrant as a CONNECTED NAME in the TAG SETTINGS section first (then remove after transfer is complete).

If the domain is back with the seller, but get an error releasing to your tag, it is a similar issue of having to add them in your connected names first...unless it is in your name already, in which case, hmmm.

That might be the missing step!

I misread your post because I just noticed you wrote "Use Existing", because when I'm doing a transfer I choose "New Registrant" or whatever it says.

So I think you meant that when someone does a tag change to "you", you do a transfer to yourself by using "Use Existing", yes?

Yep, that is what you do, but may need to add the connected name first.

This might be a different issue though. Happy to help if you want to drop me a message.

Thanks Ian,

If a domain is transferred to your tag without changing the registrant details, you can't then 'transfer' the domain to your name via the Web Domain Manager unless you first go into the Tag settings and add the existing 'registrant' as a 'third party'.

I thought that might be the case, that's why when I do transfers, I always fill out the details of the new registrant before transfer and tag release.

In this case, it has probably caused a problem where I've modified the registrant details by clicking the domain and account ID, because if I add the old registrants name as a connected name AFTER doing the above, nothing happens, just an error, ah well, at least I know for future reference now :)

Thanks for the help.

Transfer now completed :)

Accepted new handshake, added registrant as a connected name, then ticked the domain in Manage Domains and selected choose existing registrant for transfer, and it went through as normal, then removed connected name, done, thanks for the help with this issue, much appreciated

I remember the good old days (not long ago) when paid transfers done in about 30 seconds, now you have to click the link in the email, sign in with the bloody 2FA and go to another page in the control panel, then you have to go back to the same email and click the link again, going round the houses, stupid system.

Just did another transfer and that was painless now I know how.
