If you have any .uk Whois lookups to do I would make them today before Nominet enforce GDPR tomorrow at 6am:

https://registrars.nominet.uk/news/system-announcements/1763

Note by default from tomorrow:

“The .UK WHOIS will no longer display the registrant’s name or address, unless they have given permission to do so – all other data shown in the current .UK WHOIS will remain the same.

For registrants who wish for their data to be published in the WHOIS, we will provide appropriate mechanisms to allow them to give their explicit consent.”

So as a Self Managed tag holder....

You will need to opt-in EACH CONTACT via the web domain manager (WDM) or EPP to show your Whois:

I wonder how many other registrars will provide this option from day one...

Reading their info page, it looks like everyone will be opted out by default on May 22 i.e. tomorrow, and we'll have to opt back in again manually via WDM or EPP. Hopefully they'll have some kind of bulk function so that we don't have to do it a couple of hundred names at a time!

With Nominet you will only have to do it on the contact that you apply to each portfolio of .uk names.

That requires your existing portfolio to have a merged contact though and not hundreds of contact IDs ;)

When this is applied to .com and .net (thin registeries) at the end of the week though it’s likely you will have to do it one at a time (unless your registrar has coded a bulk contact update)

Well I'm assuming you'll be able to check DNS and various other things to ensure a site is trustworthy or not. Plus, surely companies worth their salt will opt-in to having their info shown?

IF their registrar has that option. Some may not. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Anyone know where this opt in part is in WDM, I can't see it and that link only gives EPP details, no mention of where in WDM the option is.
Web Domain Manager > Manage Contacts > select a contact and there is two tick options at the bottom. You can do the same via ticking a domain in the WDM, then 'transfer', then entering new contact information if you need to disclose the name on some, but not all.

@ian, I'm on the Web Domain Manager > Manage Contacts page, but maybe yours is displaying differently to mine, depending on what browser your using?

The reason I ask is, you said

select a contact and there is two tick options at the bottom

Mine displays like this

If I select either of those contact boxes on the left, no boxes appear at the bottom as you suggest.

I thought this would be a simple case of there being a page with an opt in button to tick, how easy would that be.

1. Click on one of the contacts (i.e. the linked names)
2. Choose "Modify"
3. Down the bottom of the form there's a "Public Information" section. Tick both boxes.
4. Next
5. Submit Changes
6. Bingo!

Hope that helps...

@Edwin, thanks, that's sorted it, cheers.

I misread what @ian was saying, when he said select a contact, I thought he meant by selecting the tick box next to the contact, doh.

Click your name, that will take you to the contact information, i.e. name, address etc, and the two boxes are at the bottom.

Yep, same as clicking on the name of the contact; takes you to the same screen.

When selling a name, I always found the easiest way to confirm a name had been transferred was to direct the buyer to the Nominet whois so they could see they were now the Registrant.

Any ideas for this now only the Registrar is shown?

Transfer it yourself and opt the buyer in before releasing to their new TAG?

I assume you would need to seek their permission to opt them in and I'm not sure how that would stand with Nominet requiring their direct permission.

Just put a disclaimer in the sales e-mail saying that they will be opted in in order to confirm the transfer and they should let you know if they disagree.

For people who are less savvy I always do the Nominet email because I worry if I try and explain I can do the transfer myself they will think I'm trying to pull a fast one

This definitely isn't going to be ideal

If your wanting to be compliant with GDPR you can't do that anymore , it doesn't count as consent.

Can you highlight said disclaimer to the buyer, and confirm with them, this is the process to validate the transaction ?

The details of the process are unimportant so don't get bogged down in them. Just ask for the minimum information required to facilitate the transfer and tell them that you'll request Nominet to transfer the domain into their name. Once you've completed the transfer, send them a link to the whois and ask them to ask their hosting company for the TAG they want the domain transferred to.

If your wanting to be compliant with GDPR you can't do that anymore , it doesn't count as consent.

Then ask them if they're happy for their details to be displayed via the whois so that they can confirm that the domain has been transferred and that they're the new registrant. It's just semantics and as I said above, the less of a deal you make, the less of problem it will be.
