Nearly a follow on from my last thread, but basically I now have a VPS but only noticed that everything has to be done via the command line now.

Anyone have experience with this? Willing to pay for it to be set up as I need the site online today if possible.

I've made a site with a good few JSP's using NetBeans and basiaclly I need this online asap.

Kind regards,
Jamie.

Pay the host to install whm/cpanel on it.......instant pain relief! :)

I've already got WHM on it yet I still can't manage to do it. It's even more annoying knowing that it'd take minutes if I knew what I was doing.

Assuming you've got nowhere yet, in WHM under the account information section, choose create a new account (you may need to use the search box if you don't see the option - 'create a new account'), follow that through, it's a bit like adding an add-on domain in cpanel.

Once that's done the account is created on the server, a cpanel is created for the domain and you should be able to ftp in to upload your files.

Don't know if that helps as have no idea how set up the server is - are nameservers all setup etc.?

Thanks Grant. That sounds fine but see the problem is that I need to install a few things like tomcat (so my java files work).

Jamie what is the actual problem you're facing? Or is it just in general setting up and configuring a VPS? For JSP you will need to install something like TomCat or Blazix for your server.

I have to ask what possessed you to write in JSP rather than something more accessible like PHP?

Edit: How much someone can help really does depend on how far setup your VPS is. If your VPS is based on a basic image of Linux you'll have to do a lot of leg work in terms of security yourself too.

Most Linux distro's package repositories should have Tomcat, so you should be able from the command line do something like apt-get install tomcat to get it up and running.

Thanks,
Dave

Yeah it's the general setting up. I need tomcat and maybe another thing or two. (mysql is already there as far as I know)

Used Jsp's since this is a college project that needed to be done in java. Once I have everything set up I think I just need to move over the .war file from Netbeans.

Ah, well for stuff like that I assume you will need to rebuild apache/php with whatever you need included. That can be done from WHM using the easyapache option. I'm not expert on what you're doing though so don't blame me if everything breaks :)

Thanks, tried that earlier and got an error but I'll give it another shot in the morning.
Starting to wonder if that's the only thing I need to install. Think it might be unless I'm forgetting something.

I can have a look for you, but will have to be tomorrow evening I'm afraid, as I need to get some sleep now before work in the morning. If that's too long to wait I wish you luck with it. :)

Cheers Dave. I'll give it another go in the morning too and see if I get any further. If not I'll get in touch :)

Thanks again for the help. I better get some sleep now too!

It's a tuned cPanel/WHM setup designed for regular VPS operations. You can actually install Tomcat via WHM so no command line knowledge required. http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/EasyApache/Tomcat/

Got a little more time today to help you - I'll check out the error now..
