I noted the discussion about adult google ads and wonder how this recently passed law might effect things as well;
The language of section § 2252B [links to www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00002252---B000-.html] of the bill, entitled "Misleading domain names on the Internet":


(a) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a person into viewing material constituting obscenity shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.

(b) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a minor into viewing material that is harmful to minors on the Internet shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 4 years, or both.

(c) For the purposes of this section, a domain name that includes a word or words to indicate the sexual content of the site, such as "sex" or "porn", is not misleading.

(d) For the purposes of this section, the term "material that is harmful to minors" means any communication, consisting of nudity, sex, or excretion, that, taken as a whole and with reference to its context-

(1) predominantly appeals to a prurient interest of minors;

(2) is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community as a whole with respect to what is suitable material for minors; and

(3) lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.

(e) For the purposes of subsection (d), the term "sex" means acts of masturbation, sexual intercourse, or physcial [1] contact with a person's genitals, or the condition of human male or female genitals when in a state of sexual stimulation or arousal.

The law is already receiving criticism from those who feel it is a violation of free speech. Blogger "Shii [links to shii.wordpress.com/2006/07/26/goatse-now-illegal-in-the-united-states/]" fears the language of the law prohibits even "prank links."

"So, what does this bill outlaw? You can't put prank links to Goatse anymore, because they decieve people into viewing obscenity. More importantly, you can't link to erotic art on a website that minors might read without explicitly explaining its erotic nature. So, if I were to link to, say, the anime image database Danbooru, that would be totally illegal because I didn't tell you what sort of pictures you might find there."

What's Goatse? It's um, erm, uh?You really don't want to know.

I'm not sure that ND really has much to say on this issue. It's certainly worth a discussion, but not sure if the ND page is the best place for it... We will accept pretty much any name that anyone wants to list other than those to do with child pornography. I know there are a myriad of other domains that shouldn't be accepted for various reasons of offence, but it is an internal ND decision not to take these.
As mentioned with Nigel as well, all domains that come into the system are automatically on a non-adult feed unless listed in the adult category, with adult keywords or templates etc.

As has been stated many times, the Internet is still in its infancy. It's often compared to Television. The TV was invented in a far slower-moving society than we live in today, but in terms of age, the Internet is still taking the first steps. There is a long way to go for legislation, maturation and development of the Internet. I'm sure of one thing: In the next 3 years, we'll probably see as much change in this space as we have in the last decade.
Amazing when you think that ND is already 1 year old in the next 4 weeks! Time flies.

What I was referring to was, lets say you have a domain name www.cartoons.co.uk or whatever and google happen to place a porn link/s on that domain ,we could be then liable perhaps ?.

That's why we have all non-adult domains on Google's non-adult feed. It would certainly be fun to see which one of the three would be liable if something were to slip through the Google adult filter.

How do you (ND) define "non adult" domains ?.

As mentioned above, anything that is not listed in the adult category, with an adult keyword or with an adult template.
