I've been pretty bullish on .tv names for a few months now - still some fantastic names available for hand reg /cheap purchase...

Just saw the second use of .tv name in a commercial on a terrestrial station.

The first was some dodgy looking bike insurance co - but the second was
legalandgeneral [dot] tv - so a commercial 'heavy-weight' deems it viable to be spending their £000's in advertising using .tv

Considering the continual evolution of broadband I reckon the right names will start to really pick up some value in the next 12-36 months...

They are frequently used on TV advertising campaigns as a redirect to more information - take the Legal & General domain as an example. I can't see them using the .TV for their main website anytime soon... ;)

Perhaps good for an advertising campaign or video based website, but depends on the keywords and most wouldn't really be suitable.

i can see the .tv being useful for live stream channels. many owners are streaming shows, music, events, meetings, etc. this would be absolutely perfect. personally i'm going to look into it for myself. thanks for the info.

I am bullish about this extension, e.g. I own bikeinsurance.tv, but you do have to watched the renewal fees (£25 per year) with large portfolios.

I've always liked the extension and you do see some nice sales on dnjournal from time to time. That's very interesting that an insurance giant like legal and general are now using a .tv. We still own a few nice ones including motorinsurance.tv and breaks.tv.

I think they are particularly good where a company wants an ongoing television presence. Look at my HolidayCottages.tv - lends itself perfectly.
Or if something relates to television like my CC.TV
But I think you have to be even more selective with this extention, so you will see lots of keywords never registered, it's a different ballgame.

It seems that this is an ideal way to actually check some form of response from TV advertising. Since you can never know who is actually paying attention and there aren't nearly as many stats attached to it as with web advertising.

Aside from that, video sites? Humber.tv ? :)

I hate this extension.. would never touch it :) Rather having some nice .com's, co.uk's and .se domains

Its a great way for them to see how well their TV adverts are running.

Normaly companies will use something like domainname.co.uk/tvoffer, but obviously using domainname.tv directed to their .co.uk/.com campaign will be a more accurate method.

Recently I offered CruiseOffers.tv up for sale here and on the various .com focused forums. I didn't get any interest, and almost let it drop. However, I think it's a fantastic name so I've renewed it. Hopefully I'll be able to sell it to a cruise company in the not too distant future, but it just goes to show the appetite amongst domainers for .tv isn't great. I still like the extension quite a lot, I just don't like the renewal fees.

I think there are 2 main uses for .tv at the moment. Firstly we have the new generation of online TV channels. Something like cooking.tv makes an ideal extension for a cookery channel and one in which you could choose the dish to be cooked. Shopping.tv would be ideal for a QVC type channel with the added benefit of being interactive so you could choose what type of products you want to see being demonstrated.

Then we have the 2nd use - large companies who advertise on TV, who have registered their name in the .tv extension and are advertising that site on TV purely to check how many hits come after each TV commercial, a reasonable way of monitoring the effectiveness of a TV commercial. I imagine they probably do no SEO on the .tv sites to not confuse the stats.

So in terms of speculative domain value, it's important not to confuse the two markets because they're completely different. The TV advertisers will on the whole want their brand rather than a generic. The generic domains will only really be of value if it's something that would work as an actual online TV channel. Hence something like accountant.tv or businesscards.tv wouldn't really work since very few people would want to watch a TV programme about that sort of thing.

I have been into .TV for 5 years and have done pretty well out of it , including sales of $xx,xxx this year alone.

It is an entirely different market to .co.uk, in the last few weeks we have seen sales like Shoes.tv $18k, Metal.tv for $16k,Skins.tv $13k,Gadgets.tv for $7.5k
Not to mention that Canada.tv changed hands twice last week for mid-high $xx,xxx

previous sales like RT.TV $65K, Now Used by Russia Today,Buisness.tv $100k, and many more.
Recently i had another x,xxx offer on a name which i turned down.

I see a lot of people registering words that just wont work, i would suggest anyone interested do research first.
Recently there has been a lot interest and sales in .tv.

Not sure if i can give link to other forums ,but it is a totally dedicated .tv forum with loads of information and chat for those thinking of entering the .tv market.

And of course anyone interested in .tv , feel free to pm me , i am always happy to help out, like you guys have for me with .co.uk.
One good turn and all that......

Hi

Thanks for all that useful info on .tv - very handy to have our very own .tv expert on acorndomains :) With your sales have you been proactive (i.e. approaching endusers/buyers) or have you simply waited for bids on Sedo? Those two .tv names in your signature are very nice ones - were your sales of a similar quality?

Kind regards,

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

Over the years i have sold names like Darts.tv,NorthernIreland.tv,Seoul.tv,Noticias.tv ( News.tv in Spanish),NI.TV,Wembley.tv, plus many many more

I do sometimes try to contact potential end users, but all my sales are via sales threads or people approaching me via Sedo or email from whois.

When .tv dropped the yearly premium renewal in March this year it opened up .tv to a larger audience and i think thats why we are seeing far more domainers getting into it, that and of course the usage on .tv and the very decent sales of late.

If you are interested there is a great list of recent sold .tv names here

Thanks for the info and the link which looks interesting. We haven't got many .tvs and have been faithfully renewing them. Looks like they may give a return one day.

If GM.TV chose to sell on the name it would be interesting to see how much it fetched. There may be a potential buyer waiting.

Hmmmm..... TV, CC, WS - completely unchartered territory for me. Interesting to know though. To be honest I am watching for EU to pick up. Maybe this is because my main interest is B2B where those extensions don't make much sense.

i'm acquiring some .tv names for my live stream domains. i love this extension. unless .biz it definitely makes a statement. a positive statement.

Nobody here or on other forums wanted to buy GirlsShoes.tv or CruiseOffers.tv when I put them up for offer recently ... both quite good names IMO.
