Hi

I run a site using wordpress, i am sick of getting spammed with trashy comments (To be fair im not sure how they are doing it because i removed the comments form, from page.php which i thought would do it but seemingly not) Does anyone know of a way to stop the comments once and for all?

Turn off comments in Settings>Discussion which stops them for future posts or pages. If you select all your current posts/pages using the checkboxes then use 'quick edit' you can de-select 'allow comments'. Hope this is clear enough as I'm on my phone!

Install Wordfence plug-in plus there is also a Geo IP one so you can block traffic from the countries that you do not want to be able to access your site. I do this to block the Baidu spider (Chinese search engine) but I expect your spammers are probably outside the UK too.

Turn on "users must be registered to post comments" and then install the "StopForumSpam" plugin, this will check a remote DB for known spammers when they try to register by email address, IP and username.

Make sure you're using askismet as well.
Turm off comments globally or set to registered userd only and set to posts to be moderated.

If they don't see their posts their straight away then they stop.

A time saving tip for you, if you are doing multiple sites make a copy of all the plugins you use into a folder on your PC. After you set up a new site, copy the plugins into the site in one go via FTP, then all you have to do is activate and update any that need it. Saves you searching and downloading them one by one each time.

Great tip. I keep telling myself that I'll do this on the next site that I make but I never do!

I did this but the problem is you have to update all the plugins if a lot of time passes between sites. This takes almost the same time.

If you create a batch of sites then it sure saves a lot of time.

And when you've finished updating the plug ins in Wordpress copy the newer versions back to the "master directory" using FTP so you've got them all fresh for next time.

Easy Peasy, a complete doddle, candy from a baby etc (trying v. hard not to say "simples")

Try askismet, also set comments to be approved before they show. That should help a bit.

+1 for Akismet.

Just remember to grab your API key for it by registering at Wordpress.com too :)

Go through all your .php files and look for anything mentioning comments then delete (or safest) comment out the appropriate lines of code.

When I did this, I found comments were sneaking in by means I hadn't thought of.

As said, also change your settings from within Wordpress.
