Drop cycle

My prediction: You can now renew at any point until the domain drops. The domain can drop at any time after 90 days. Drop catching will change completely, with chasers potentially being tied up for weeks or months on a single domain. Nominet will retain the stance that there has been no rule change and it has always been this way.

This will continue for a couple of months to show us how much Nominet can really mess things up if they put their mind to it, and to allow them to collate a healthy number of complaints about the uncertain timings of drops. Then they'll announce their proposals for pre-published drop times "in response to positive feedback from the community"

Shall I eat my hat!?

Shall we see what happens tomorrow?

The second point to consider is that Nominet have emailed Registrars since 10th September with the deletion date being at 91 days not 92. So they can't recall all those emails. I doubt they'll reissue them. Is it a mistake on their part? Is it deliberate? Are they just changing drop days this week to throw us off?

Looks like there were some drops yesterday - findagadget.co.uk for one

They could well be implementing some Christmas surprises for the end of the month due to all the domains that are going to drop from those registrars that have to release all the free .uk domains they registered "Without permission but Obviously in good faith in case the given client wanted the .uk" kind of like a 2nd RoR

Wouldn't surprise me at all, I've got quite a few for January which I expect will get messed up by this shambles.

This was scheduled to drop 2019-12-10.

Domains that dropped yesterday;
  • abirk co.uk
  • dormabedding uk
  • fattoushkingston co.uk
  • lgcandnlgn-laa co.uk
  • one-click co.uk
  • phonecredit uk
  • pizzahut org.uk
  • primalsalad co.uk
  • racmagazine co.uk
  • thehutpriorybay co.uk
  • travargo uk
  • travelaxe co.uk
  • workinglocations co.uk
There is a chance some of these dropped within the first few moments after midnight, particularly as it's weighted towards the latter end of the alphabet.

However, phonecredit uk has a registration date of yesterday so it did drop yesterday, or was deleted before the drop day.

Do you know whats dropped today what was scheduled for 2019-12-12?

All of those except pizzahut dropped at 1 second past midnight as far as I saw. I was monitoring the whole list from 5 to midnight seeing if there was going to be a deluge of domains dumped just before midnight. I assumed pizzahut was a deletion or something being a tm. So far everything is dropping today that would have dropped today 'normally'. Nothing from tomorrows list has dropped. So unless anything changes we are back to how it was before the two days of early drops and one day of nothing.

Currently, these domains are ftr;
  • cryptocrammer ltd.uk
  • currycottagecatford co.uk
  • firstplusfinancialgroup plc.uk
  • gigitgeek co.uk
  • jasminegarden-takeaway co.uk
  • logistician co.uk
  • queenshouse-doncaster co.uk
  • quicktechsolutions co.uk
However, not clear if these were manually deleted before the drop date. I'm running some further checks.

Did phonecredit uk do the same? The registration date is 11th.

ejstyle.co.uk this was booked in with me for today (and due to drop today), and was caught today (not by me). Dropped not so long ago, so that name seemed to be a normal drop.

None of yesterday’s domains dropped.

The test was to prove if the domains were deliberately stopped from dropping, and as the software dropped a manually scheduled domain, they were held.

That's odd, why would they do that?

I can confirm ejstyle was in today's drop list so anyone that has this down for tomorrow has their drop lists 1 day in front.

I sent an email to Nominet late last night venting my frustration with this. I told them I don't want one of their generic template emails in response and I have heard nothing back since.

They are out at polling stations!

You'll probably get a reply just before they leave the office - it'll no doubt be a bcc reply to all :)
When they give you the usual 'Domains can be renewed any time for 90 days after expiry and will then become available some time after that', which is their standard answer, you can try pointing out that:
a) you can renew your domains any time for 91 days and
b) They are only becoming available from the 92nd day and onwards.
They'll go away and a few days later come back with 'Domains can be renewed any time for 90 days after expiry and will then become available some time after that, have a lovely day'.

In short don't waste your time. They always seem to coincidentally have DAC/EPP issues about the times when they want to 'discuss' ideas for change and push you in the direction they want you to go.

So probably this from the first page of the thread ;):
Everything will be back to normal by Thursday.

Nominet had maintenance scheduled on Wednesday 9th October, the result of which suspended names a day earlier than they should have. As I use zone files for the basis of my drop list I can see this anomaly.

All I can find on Nominet regarding the process is: https://www.nominet.uk/domain-support/

If your registrar does not renew your domain name with us before the expiry date, we’ll send an email to the contact email address held against the domain name. The email will contain your registrar’s contact details, so you can contact them about renewing the domain name.

Once you’ve gone over your expiry date, you’ll still have time to renew your domain before it gets cancelled, so there’s no need to panic. But if we don’t receive a renewal request within 30 days of the expiry date, we’ll suspend the domain name. This means all services that use that domain name, such as your website and email, will stop working. We’ll send you a suspension warning seven days before this happens, and will also send you a suspension notice when it takes place, unless your registrar has opted you out of receiving these. It’s still possible to renew your domain during this time.

When your domain has been suspended for 60 days without being renewed, we’ll schedule it for cancellation. We’ll send you one final reminder to renew your domain 83 days after the expiry date. As this is just seven days before your domain is scheduled for cancellation, you’ll have to act quickly if you wish to renew it at this last stage.

Once cancelled, the domain name will become instantly available to others who may wish to re-register it.
