I saw the same a few hours ago.
It seems to me that some people are playing the system and deliberately paying renewals at the very last possible moment (presumably for cashflow reasons) which must be a headache for Nom.
Given that all of these renewals were actually due three months ago, I'd be in favour of Nominet processing drops at 99 days come what may. If you paid just days before the drop date and Nominet didn't get round to processing it before it dropped then tough, that's the risk you take for leaving it until 3 months after the renewal date.
I'm sure persistent offenders would very quickly start to pay on time just like everyone else.

The Registrant doesn't gain any length in time on the domain period by letting it expire and then renewing, so can only assume cash flow or forgetfulness to be the issue.
I use to research lists several days out, but found come drop day ~5% gets renewed (and they are more desirable), so I do it one or two days out now to save my time.
I've noticed the drop lists on a daily basis have gone from ~1000 down to ~400. Time of year? or has Nominet forgotten to send out renewal notices again.
