Selling advice please

Hi,

Only had DAC access for few days and still learning what to catch and what to not catch etc... However I got one last night which prompted an immediate email below

....

Hi,

How is it that you have been able to take my domain name?

I have been waiting to renew my domain after my domain company stuffed up with its renewal, where it was then suspended and we had to wait until the registrar released it again.

What are you doing with it? I have had this domain for almost 3 years now, and I have great need of it.

You're not going to try and sell it to me for thousands of dollars are you?

.....

I'm not sure how to respond, yes I want to sell although I have no idea of traffic yet so no idea of price. Caught me a bit by surprise.

Any suggestions welcome on how to handle this.

Dave

Depends on the name , generic terms then its their own fault, but bobsfishnchipship.co.uk would be giving it back :)

This has happened before, and to me as well... as the catcher.

The issue here is between the registrar/isp & between them and nominet. Nominet don't drop names without going through the due process, and if this is a normal domain then it would have gone through the detagged/suspended cycle. During this process the registrar would have been contacted and eventually a last gasp pro-forma invoice sent.

That the previous owner knew about this is not always the case. He/She should have contacted the registrar and Nominet. Going through this process the domain would not have been pointing to a site.

Even in a suspended state the registrar could have renewed the registration. Letting it go to rereg it is negligent by the registrar.

You have done nothing wrong. In some cases Nominet will under extreme justification transfer the registration to the previous owner.

Depends on you really. A conciliatory course of action would be to give it back. Depends on why you regged it and future plans.

I'd write to the guy and stress that the onus is on him to contact the registrar and stress their negligence and for them to come to you to buy it back.

It was a 99 day drop.

I bought it solely based on the overture traffic results (91)

I actually have no idea now (since whois changed) whether this person was in fact the previous owner or not, he may be trying it on, but if the price is right I'm not sure if that matters.

As far as whether it is generic or not. it is two dictionary words, but not sure if when added together is still generic enough as it makes it more specific..

If it's the mythical creature one I think it is, have a look at archive.org there are several old pages of the site there which may give you a clue as to who used to own it.

If not you could try contacting nominet, they will have the old records

Paul yes you are correct re domain (dragonriders.co.uk to save those looking it up), I'm not inclined to bother contacting nominet as as far as I'm concerned I bought it fair and square after a 99 day drop. I've had 85 views on namedrive in last 3 hours but only 2 clicks. I be happy to sell if the price is right to him or anyone here, but not really sure of value yet as namedrive looks promising.

PS Paul we seem to be "neighbours"?

I saw that too, give it a couple of days and the conspiracy theorists will be out

Just looked out the window... can't see it so I guess not.
But got to take wife out shopping in a bit so I'll have a closer look then.

remember that the upsurge in traffic might be the guy and/or his mates taking a look at your 'awful behaviour' ;)

I did think that it might be guess only time will tell. Like I said I'm knew to this game and this is first potentially "traffic" name I've caught since DAC access few days ago. Not really sure where I should go from here. Cash in on traffic hits or sell domain etc. What do most people on here do with similar domains?

The response you got was fairy typical of everyone who loses a domain.

Shit I feel the same when I see my old ones I forgot to renew end up with tagnames or nokta.

I think a large wet haddock is usually necessary to calm the blighters down.

Then either get them to value the domain and send you the valuation and sell it at that value or you get it valued and same.

Or if it's a fantastic name you want to keep then put an iron bar in the haddock.

ah yes, a sense of humour. You'll do well here. The sicker the better.

Firstly I'm not convinced the person is the "true owner" (a free email address)and secondly if it does have traffic then surely that alone does make it worth something?

My understanding of dropcatching is to aquire "traffic" names or "generic" names.

It could be worth setting a 'low' price of say £100 open for the next two weeks , and point them towards the DRS section of nominet. Let them know you look forward to hearing back either accepting the offer or a DRS , if not you consider the matter closed.

No doubt they will reply with a generous 'double your money' offer of a tenner... ;)

One thing that puzzled me was his comment

"...I have had this domain for almost 3 years now..."

surely he's either had it for 2 +99days or 4+99days?

or does he mean 2ys 99days is almost 3 yrs?

Strange they mention Dollars for a .co.uk name

That was the other reason that made me wonder if genuine.

I think I'm just going to ignore him and see if he contacts me again, and take it from there.
