Modern, fast and flexible Wordpress themes?

For a while now I've used Avada, which I think is the best selling Wordpress theme of all time. You can make some great looking sites with it, but I find it so slow and bloated, and I've seen a lot of others say similar. Yes I can use a caching plugin for frontend speed, but the admin backend is painful to work in.

Does anyone have any recommendations for themes that are well supported / updated, flexible design wise, and fast? What do you folks use as your base theme to start a new site?

I have used studiopress for 5 years plus and been very happy. The themes are a little basic compared to some but they are not bloated and easy to adapt. The support forum isn't much use but their dedicated support is pretty good if you need it. There is a bit of learning curve, as with any framework, but nothing too taxing.

Enfold....

Not a wordpress theme but for a pure blog (not content site) I would really recommend a Ghost blog (https://ghost.org/developers/). It's free and open source and I have found the themes to be fantastic and the blog to be far faster than Wordpress.

It might be worth considering.

I use Thesis2 and Enfold theme. I'm not an expert on speed times but I've had no issues with them.

Thesis2 takes a bit of getting used to and I nearly gave up on it when it came out as I preferred the original Thesis theme but it's pretty easy now. The only thing is I haven't really found a skin that I would consider really modern as compared to what the Enfold theme (as @willbon suggests) can produce, but it has a good forum for support.

Enfold theme produces some really nice looking websites, it's pretty easy to use and also has good support. I changed one site over to Enfold from Thesis2 and considered doing the same with another, but I prefer the overall usability for a non-expert like myself in the backend of Thesis2 at the moment.

Anyway there's an Enfold showcase here of users websites - http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-showcase/page/39/

That's the last page of the showcase by the way, not the only page.

Take a look at Newspaper / Newsmag from Tagdiv. I'm a fan. Its a paid theme but you can control every little thing.

we use to use studiopress and it worked very well, now we only use it for tiny sites.

we now soley use divi3+ , loads of tutorials, freebies and the themes/skins that are not expensive, HOWEVER we haven't bought a theme yet as the base is so adaptable.
