Penguin rolling out

I'm so excited I could rip a tissue and wrestle a reindeer. Seriously! After waiting 2 years, the fact it is now going to be updated and also baked into the algo for real time punishment and recovery can only be a good thing.

Pretty chuffed with the penguin update. A site I bought at the end of last year (which I was not aware had penguin holding it back and was bought based on current rankings) has been released and traffic taken off. Its my best adsense site and its traffic has increased about 40% since start of this month, thats just over 4k sessions a day.

What does "It's being integrated into the core algo so there will be no more refreshes after this, it'll be real time." mean in laymans terms??

Simple. Penguin updates had to be ran manually, it was like an overlay on the natural ranking algorythm that hit affected sites hard. It had been over 2 years since they last ran it ! So if you had a site affected by Penguin you were pretty much screwed until the update and IMO 2 years is irresponsibly long for an update. Being 'part of the core algo' now means we do not have to wait for updates, sites can lose or gain ranking due to penguin in more or less real time.

I talk about these updates if you are interested: https://www.misterweb.co.uk/google-updates/

It also means that affected domains may no longer be irrecoverable.

Bargains to be had?

A bit more clarity around Google's "demote" vs "devalue" language:

@martin-s ... thanks for that. It seems to me that they have opened the door to more grey hat and black hat SEO techniques. You can gain low rate links without risk of penalty, worse case scenario is they are devalued. If you get a manual action, you know about it from Search console and can fix it sharpish. Seems better for website owners in that they are not going to get whole site demotions at Googles whim but it will result in an increase in spammy links again.
