I'm starting this thread because I'm super frustrated and I don't think my wife wants to hear about it!

Maybe other people can come and vent here about things that pee you off about the day to day in this (or other) business...

My whinging isn't meant to name and shame anyone. I don't need the bad karma going forward, but I have:
  • two people who I've bought domains from who are ignoring my messages, I've even tried calling them without much success
  • someone who I've done advertising for who gives me a different story each day about when I'm going to get paid (now been going on for 2 weeks)

Trying to chase up the domain transfers and the cash from the advertiser every few days is really bogging me down. I'm thinking about removing all unpaid advertising for the one client (although he has paid in the past and I don't want to lose the income if he does) and I guess I just have to wait and see about the people I've bought domains off who aren't replying to me (it's been almost 3 weeks with one of them)

I guess my biggest irritation is that I'm generally a fast buyer and seller. Also I'd never tell someone, "accounts will pay you in the morning", "on Wednesday", "sorry about the delay you'll be paid in the afternoon"... and then keep changing the story.

It seems as though I'm getting this kind of thing a lot recently. Any one else seeing this? Have any tips?

I just wanted to add, that while going through this I really appreciate the people I've had such smooth transactions with (whether as a buyer/seller) and the clients who pay on time or even if they are a bit late, they let you know. An example of a smooth transaction was with GW for dashcams on DL (paid and transfered within a couple of hours). It makes such a difference: complete business, then move on - not hold things up for weeks adding uncertainty.

I would name and shame once it gets out of hand and is an outright piss-take. Saves grief for others who might consider doing business with these unconscionable suckers of docks.

I think I know who you are referring to and they do eventually pay up

Hi WW,

I know the feeling here, lol. I recently had a new advertiser on one of my sites (not a member here) who owed a large invoice and kept telling me similar - e.g. Pay you end of day, tomorrow etc, ignored my emails etc. I removed the ads after two weeks of it and told them it's now our policy to remove unpaid advertisements and they can go live once payment has been received.

Lo and behold I had full payment at the end of that day (within the hour in fact!) even though the owner was 'out of the country'. ;) Kept it polite and professional, but some people take the mick and its frustrating and time consuming to chase them. I don't want to lose business either, but sometimes enough is enough.

As for the domain transfers - I note the member I think you're referring to here does it quite often?! Very rude and unnecessary I say.

Hope you get sorted soon. :)

Don’t be so desperate to do work for nothing? They either pay on completion or have a account if they wish account facility then you have to be prepaid to wait but you can charge a higher rate for 7, 14, 21, 28 etc days, Do Stage payments, Time wasted chasing up bad payers could be used looking for new clients, names etc its completely wasted … Set up standing orders for regular advertisers. Find out the accounts procedure dates timescales etc first if they only pay bills on the 30th your not getting paid before ?

Common fear is you’ll lose the advertiser that may be true if your product/ service / bait is weak then advertisers will be so also? They’ll make you wait? If your buying/ selling names of value use a solicitor ( most will do so for around an hours fee ) once name is transferred to them then deposit monies vice versa for sale until then your capital, name etc is free? If you let business take advantage they will. The main reason is bad business practice from the start which will get worse not better redefine you contract for advertisers buying selling names setting out timescales and consequences/penalties of late payments etc nail it down at the start then there is no confusion etc. Don’t be afraid to loose them if it’s a viable service there will always be others if its not then why do it in the first place?

Thanks for the replies - feel better for venting now.
I'll see what happens by the end of the day tomorrow with it being a work day.

How are you getting on? Hope you got your money owed OK. :)

Did the domains get transferred?

Domains still not transfered and one guy seems to still be ignoring my emails.

Advertising paid for quickly after I removed it and told them.
Really didn't want it to come to that. Not sure what I'm going to do about the domains yet. One of the deals is xxxx and the other xxx, not sure why people think they don't have to reply to messages (I know that they are still around, one I spoke to on the phone!)

Name and shame the domainers I say - especially if on Acorn, it's not on. I mean it only takes a few minutes of your time to initiate a domain transfer.....!

Glad you got your £££. :)

Have you tried contacting them from a different email address or phone to usual, just to see if they reply if they don't know who is contacting them?

I spoke to one on the phone and he said he was going to transfer on Friday. I got off the phone, waited a few hours and still nothing. No transfer over the weekend or this week.

It was like a different reality what was being said on the phone and what's happened.

I'm really baffled. Not sure if my money's at risk or if the guy has some other issues going on. You know, things happen in life that get in the way of business, but the silence and the alternate reality phone call are just weird.

I can't understand (unless 'life' is getting in the way with some urgent issues, etc) why people delay on starting a domain transfer, especially when they've been paid in full and have the money/have further said they'll do it etc.

There isn't an excuse unless there's an emergency preventing someone from doing it.

Why delay anyway? Perhaps to keep earning income from parked domains/sites in the meantime or they've had another higher offer since yours? It is baffling WW! ;)

I agree. Go and view their public profile. It will tell you the last time they were on the forum. If it has been since Friday they (imo) are taking the piss.

They could transfer the name quicker than spending 5mins here.

Sorry to hear you've had problems. I was going to have a massive whinge on here but I'll save it for another day.

Over the last few years I've had various people not pay invoices for a plethora of reasons. I'm not familiar with the intricacies of your specific case(s), but I find that 99% of people soon pay up what they owe when you send a LBA, or issue court proceedings.

I was under the impression that this was all fairly expensive but a friend recommended the below site to me around 12 months ago. It only costs about £2.50 to issue an LBA, which more often than not is the kick up the arse clients need in order to pay.

Obviously this won't help secure domains you've paid for and not received, but it might help someone looking to recover funds from an unpaid invoice.

The company I use is: http://www.thomashiggins.com/

I hope this helps someone anyway. They've helped me to recover outstanding amounts on multiple occasions (without their help I would otherwise have not been paid).

Bad clients just make me appreciate the good ones even more. :)

Nope, not yet.

Thanks for the info above.

I've got the reverse issue. Sold a name on ebay and had to chase the buyer. Found him mentioned on here as not paying on a sedo deal. I pointed this out to him as a concern and he paid but I've now initiated the transfer 3 times and all have timed out. I'm starting to think he's doing it on purpose so he can go back to ebay and reclaim the money!
not sure how long he has to do that but theres nothing I can do is there?

Know exactly how you feel.

Any time a person takes ages to pay me I just try to remember that it's not very often that I have to chase someone up. I've probably only had issues <10 times and that's throughout a number of years so it's not much really.

This thread just reminded me that an Acorn member still owes me money from around a year or two ago actually. As far as I remember it was only £10 or £15 though.
