Please vote for David Thornton (invincible) in the Nominet election

Such a secretive man, who knows what his interests are, personally that would make me feel uncomfortable voting for him.

But if it's something he would like to do then good luck of course.

Now come on stephen take a guess....

Genuine question but I would guess the answer is no. Think it is relevant if somebody is going to actually attend board meetings in the UK.

If no, presume the location is meant to be some kind of joke.

Stephen.

He lives in Portsmouth - very near to you.

Maybe you could meet for a drink ?

Wizard lives in Hampshire too.

He lives in Portsmouth, not sure of the nature of the reasoning behind his associated companies in the Virgin Islands etc, apart from the obvious tax relief. Also owning thousands of domains with the intention of profiting from them surely raises question marks upon how this impacts upon a position within Nominet, but at least he's openly submitted this information as part of his form; ultimately all applicants have some kind of relationship to Nominet, though maybe not so direct.

In any case, good luck to David...if becoming a board member means you spend less time trying to get a rise out of members on here, it can only be a good thing :)

Seriously though, fair play for putting yourself forward and good luck.

Yes, one thing for me is I see it says

"Name Account Inc. is a customer (registrant) of under 1000 *.uk domain
names"

Name account inc isn't a UK based company I don't believe? where is it based, searching on google I'm coming up trumps as to find any information about it, the only info I know is David saying he is a director.

Also I know David has mentioned "clients", I have no idea what David or name account inc do really, if he/they just broker domains, if he/they own them or if he is just offering whois privacy services or a mixture or something else.

The above is why currently I wouldn't feel uncomfortable voting for David at the present time

Maybe he can clarify where to look for the company info and explain what name account inc actually do and his role.

Names Account inc is registered in B.V.I.

If that bothers you then I'd look in to where the other candidates companies are registered:

Dickie's company (Fibranet Services Ltd) is registered in the Isle of Man

Volker (Key-systems) is based in Germany and Luxembourg http://www.keydrive.lu

For a company such as Nominet, which is all about the brand value of the UK; operating a business in a tax haven to possibly avoid the contribution of UK tax seems a little ironic (but clearly David isn't the only one in the race doing this); however, as Murray has alluded to, we are none the wiser as to what David actually does within this sector so maybe he'll kindly enlighten us so we can make an informed decision.

Then you need to look in to where Nominet has invested it's surplus since 2006:

We have continued to utilise the two offshore investment funds based in Dublin and the Isle of Man as part of long- term aim to provide the potential for capital growth in a tax efficient manner via a relatively low risk investment strategy

Also...

If you use any new gTLD registry today the parent company will be most likely be off-shore or in Dublin.

I don't really understand the strategy behind this if I'm honest.

You've been one of the more objectionable users of this forum over the last year and have given quite a few members a rub-down on multiple occasions, did you not think this might have an impact on whether they'd vote for you?

I do think you actually contribute to the forum and wider community significantly though and I know you mean well but I'm torn at the moment.

I've been out for dinner with a friend (the one who's purchased the three .wales for his card shops back over there) this evening so this thread caught me slightly by surprise because there hasn't been any discussion of nominations being open this year on the forum. Naturally I'd anticipated there might eventually be discussion about my decision to stand so I'd given a bit of thought to how I would respond.

I'd prefer to try to build relationships with Nominet members beyond the confines of the forum, hence my post about being more than happy to use audio or video facilities to do so, so we can have a bit of back and forth conversation allowing me to explain my decision to stand. Please feel free to drop me a short email saying who you are and if you'd like to engage with me in this kind of way. My email address is in my profile.

I am currently based in the UK but there is no requirement to be based in the UK to fulfil the roll and at least one of the current candidates is based in Germany. I wouldn't expect any decision by me to move abroad would affect my ability to attend board meetings. I suspect Nominet will fund any economy travel should any non executive director be away on business outside the UK in order to enable them to return for board related commitments.
