I've just threw up an http://www.associate-o-matic.com/ 30 day trial version. No idea if it's any good as I only spent 5 minutes on it. Too many options to configure so I closed my browser. If it makes any money in 30 days I might spend some time studying the options.

I can see them going down the mobile phone route, give the equipment away for next to nothing and make money on the ebook purchases.

I can't see them taking that route - there is one massive difference in phones and kindles that will prevent it ever happening, imo.

You can't steal phonecalls - you can steal ebooks.

Bought a kindle myself a few months back, absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend it
